Oh - didn't know that. I suppose it makes sense, to ensure the records are spot on.

Re: Tattoo CPD

I didn't realise that this was such a rare thing now. I know that people don't generally go for tattooing as a way of identification as there are now microchips but I thought that since the police are forcing these dogs to have tattoos that there may be more need for it. May be it's a good thing that this isn't seen that often as it means less dangerous dogs??? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Either way it does worry me that there isn't a proper course for it because if I hadn't of learnt from my partner I don't know how I would've worked out how to do it

Re: Tattoo CPD

It isnt the greyhound breeders/trainers who do the tatts the GRA have people who go around and do it.

Re: Tattoo CPD

The whole point of the DDA was to get rid of specified breeds. The dogs that were already in existance were neutered and tatooed with the intention that no more would be produced. Therefore as far as I was aware any dog deemed to be of a banned breed now has to be euthanased, so I assume you mean dogs whose owners have won a court case to prevent their aggressive animal being PTS. I doubt this is very common so very few of us will have experience of this.

I would agree that the only people now regularly tatooing dogs are the racing greyhound breeders and I doubt they undertake CPD!

Re: Tattoo CPD

Greyhounds are done a different way there is a clamp stamp you change the letters/numbers put the dye on the ear the ear in the clamp and squeeze. Must be a bit weird when you discharge the dog. When the DDA came in mid 1992 the practice I was at at the time was one of the only ones locally allowed to do the neuter/tattoo/id chip of APBTs. I know we had to have some paperwork done by MAFF (DEFRA these days) and something from the Home Office, but I couldn't tell you exactly what - I was a new trainee, the practice manager dealt with all of that side of things, we only saw the dogs, and it was a very long time ago! Still the people that brought the dogs in did it voluntarily to comply with the new law - they hadn't had their animals seized, so we knew all the owners.

I'm in Essex / bordering E London. Although we do see a large number of so-called Status Dogs in this area, I'm not at a practice that deals with seized animals. I am extremely interested though - I plan to do my dissertation on why certain groups of ppl get a particular type of dog with a view to turning them into weapons.

Keep in touch,

I live in Oxfordshire and there are loads here. I'm not entirely sure what happens at it is all very secretive. We just get all the forms through to sign and obvioulsy the dog to neuter and that's about it really. We're not allowed to know the owner or any of the details of the case.

Re: Tattoo CPD

There may be, but I've never heard of one. Luckily we don't have such a high incidence of seized dangerous dogs in my area and I was very interested to hear about this - I never realised the courts would hand them back to their owners. What area are you in?

The police / court may know of a training course if it's them that order it done? Or possibly even your local dog warden?

The one's where they have been taken from the owner by the police and the court has ordered that they can have them back if they have them castrated and tattoo'd. So it's just a code that I have to do on the inside of their thigh.

I'm guessing that there probably isn't a course for this then?

Re: Tattoo CPD

What sort of tattooing?
