I thought I would not boycott it due to the programme that caused all the commotion, however I am impressed with how it has bucked the kennel club into taking some action. I agree that there needed to be some change

Re: Crufts and the Kennel Club

totally agree that public education is the way forward people need to know what hips scores and eye tests are and why they should chose a pup whose parents have them.

Re: Crufts and the Kennel Club

the pups from the non-screened bitch couldn't be sold under the ABS though in that situation. Just like a breeder could have pedigree labradors that were KC reg'd etc, and also breed crosses like labradoodles that weren't eligible.

Re: Crufts and the Kennel Club

I dont know too much about the accredited breeder scheme, but from what I can gather , a breeder can become one quite easily by providing all the necessary certification from their bitch... ie hip/elbow scores/eye testing schemes. That however as far as I am aware would not stop said breeder from breeding from another bitch who may not have all of the necessary certificates, but that breeder can still call themselves accredited.

Re: Crufts and the Kennel Club

Maybe I'm being thick but I don't understand what the kennel club is petitioning for???

"he Accredited Breeder Scheme is entirely voluntary and the Kennel Club cannot force people to raise their breeding standards, when required, without government support."

What??? Yes, the accredited breeder scheme is voluntary, so is kennel club registration full stop. The KC could decree that all litters registered with it must conform to the standards of the ABS.

The con argument is that less people will KC register, and more 'backyard' breeding will take place. But KC registration sells dogs and always will do, the remedy to this argument is public education - which is where our own industry comes in.

Is the KC campaigning for all dog breeding to be regulated by law insisting on ABS standards? If so why not say that, rather than the rather vague statement currently on their petition?

The KC could also alter breed standards, and the accredited breeder scheme, to raise health screening standards and reduce adverse impacts of breed standards.

There is an awful lot the KC could do by itself, without asking for 'government support', the reason it can't/won't is because it's membership is made up of the old guard dog breeding establishment, and they wouldn't support it.

Call me sceptical but this petition seems to be more about trying to alter public perception of the KC rather than actually doing anything about dog health.

Re: Crufts and the Kennel Club

hope it was fun cant wait to go next year. I agree with you that it wont stop the backstreet breeders but will hopefully help people to choose their new dog in a better way.
