Just wondering what kind of experiences people have had with working for the RSPCA or any of the other big charities in the UK. I am currently applying for jobs but just not sure whether the jobs would be as fulfilling as I think it

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

i have been a locum RVN in my local PDSA since october and i love it that much i have taken a permanent position. It is different to private practice, obviously, and it does carry it's own challenges as other poeple have mentioned, having to stay within budget etc, that said however, the welfare of the animal is always the highest priority, like any vets.

Interview tips I have are to learn about the organisation first, and know the other branches and what else the company does - rehoming / education etc.

There's quite a few jobs at the Blue Cross in Victoria I think... these are usually listed on the BX website.

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

I worked for the Rspca hospital in London for 5 years, and loved it. I did my training there too. I only left because of location,I moved to London to do my training and moved back North once qualified to be nearer family and friends.

the work pace is fast but organised, you will see all sorts of things and its great experience.

I loved it, the only down side was obviously the cruelty cases we had to deal with and the inevitable parvo from unvaccinated dogs, we also dealt with a lots of stray cats and wildlife.

good luck!

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

I locumed at the Blue Cross for a short while this year and really enjoyed it. I didnt do any thatre there as you have to be fully trained to their standards so everyones doing the same thing and I simply wasnt there long enough. I mainly did the consult shifts, where you stay on the consult level assist the vets with appointments, take bloods for them, triage emergencys, take extra admits upstairs and do the 2nd vax clinics - a couple hours of just vaxs with very interesting clients:) Then of course, you have cat/dog ward shifts - inpatients and readying for surgery. Everyone there was lovely and I'd definately recommend it:)

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

I'm going to be a PDSA nurse as of 9th Feb...eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek i'm excited

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

Just if there are any specific sites to look at and if there is anything you think they specifically look for? I've been working there for almost a year now and was previously at a private hospital where i qualified. The best thing about working for a charity is that the animal always comes first as there is no financial gain to be made (other than requesting a donation), and so there is no push to sell or promote money making ventures, high cost drugs etc. As a nurse i feel much more valued and use my skills to the max (plenty of sched 3). However it is almost always busy and so if you like a quiet life it may not be for you! Saying that i do not have to do any OOH and only 1 in 6 Saturdays :) Hope that helps.

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

Dippy Im interested please :)

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

I've worked at the PDSA for 6 years. it can be quite challenging at times as we have a budget to work to so we can't alwasy do all the work we want to. however, if you like a busy work environment charity work is the place to be, today we carried out 21 anaesthetics. you wil also see a lot of things that you don't routinely see in practice, we usually have a least 1 parvo a week. as a nurse you get to use all of your skills and have plenty of chances of schedule three work.

Re: RSPCA and other charity jobs

Sorry.
