Ha ha, we beat you Starbucks, try 10-12 on a Sat morning, 1 in 4. Phew its hard work. If i don't get to leave by 12.05 I get mighty upset! ha ha! Sorry for all you girls that have the crappy weekend hours. Please don't tell my bosses that nurses do ooh work in the Uk. I'm keeping it a secret from them! The 2 vets do all ooh and take the emergency phone here in Marbella! Brilliant! Mind you my pay is a bit rubbish, but I have an easy life to compensate!

We work 1:4 weekends, Friday 10.30am - 8pm, sat 8.30 - 5pm, phones got to Vets Now @ 4.30pm and Sunday 8.30 - 11.30am phones go to Vets Now 10.30am. We get the following Friday off so long weekend :-)

Yeah true, ours is a hospital too so need someone on site 24/7 to care for inpatients. I think there's a 'cut-off' time for being paid on night duties. Not sure how to enquire about that one. Also there's an odd occasion when there's an intensive care patient e.g. RTA and we have to stay up all night to monitor it. Not sure what happens re: pay in those instances...

You should be paid by the hour, if you are at work.......... working or not.Security guards who are on nights wether it is sleeping or not should be paid at least the min wage, as they are effectively at work, and the same applies to VN'sa or anyboby else on the premises of work.At the end of the day you cannot leave, you cannot do as you wish, so should be paid a retainer, so if you are retained for a 12 hour shift or likewise you should be paid for each hour youn are retained....... check out employement law, it says it all there. You are entitled to an hourly rate for retaining you from your everyday lives.

If you are required to be in the building then you are legally entitled to be paid for the time you are there.

'Working time is defined as the time that a worker is 'working, at his employer's disposal and carrying out his activities or duties'. For a worker who is 'on call', a case in the European Court of Justice (ECJ)

has decided that if a worker has to be physically present at her/his workplace during the time s/he is 'on call', then all of that time counts as working time, even if s/he is not actually working for part of it. If s/he does not have to be physically present at the workplace when on call, but merely contactable, for example, by phone, then that time spent away from the workplace does not count as working time, unless s/he is actually doing work for part of it.'

A nice vetnurse person sent me that a while ago! You should definitely be getting paid if you are there esp. as a hospital the standards require someone to be on the premises at all times!

Currently we work a 1:8 weekend rota. We work 8.30am-2.30pm then 6.30pm-8.30pm. Althou we are on call inbetween. We have interns so they generally over the bits when we aren't there. Althou, I've had a few weekends where I've been stuck at work all days with emergencies!!! We get four days off in total for working a weekend (equiveilent of double time). If we work a bank holiday we get an extra days pay, but no extra cash. Any time over the 8hrs we get paid for.

for our weekends we do 9-5 sat and sun or later if emergency comes in and the vet wants us to stay (we are lucky as its the uni we generally have 3-4 vet students in, plus 1 intern or 1st yr resident during the day and sleeps on site overnight, 1 intern up overnight, a 2nd or 3rd yr resident who comes in during the day sat and sun, plus a surgical lead clinician and a medicine based lead clinician who are on call....med one usually comes in at least during the morning on the sat) sogenerally have enough hands they dont need us later than 5pm (sometimes does happen tho.)

Technically we get an hour for lunch 1-2 each day.

We get paid time and half sat and double sun

The frequency of our rota is approx 1 in 14 although some of us will pick up extra ons where someone either doesn't want to work or cant work for some reason.

Oh, and re the above, we get the 2hrs back with a late start on the Weds before our weekend eg instead of doing 11-7 on the Weds, we do 1-7pm if it's our Sunday on.

We're very lucky as we have a trainee who opted to work every saturday as this suits her for childcare reasons so we now only work one in four Sundays, 9.30-11.30am. Prior to that it was one in four, Saturdays 9am-4.30pm plus Sundays as above and would revert to this if for any reason she left, changed her mind but right now, it's great!

I do however have a second job (Vetfone) which I do at weekends so although am not in work, am still slaving away!

I think we're quite lucky with our rota, we do a 40 hour week. There are 4 nurses so we do 1 in 4 weekends, which is 8am-6pm sat & sun (we see appointments 9am-10.30am ish depending on the calls we get that morning on the sat, the rest of the weekend is emergencies only) . We are a hospital so stay on site and take our own calls. The week following our weekend we have the monday and friday off. Which is why i'm off today, and the sun has been out for me woohoo

We do either saturday 7.45am - to 8pm and sunday 9am - 2pm, or saturday 9am till 2pm and then sunday 7.45am till 8pm, or the nightshift weekend 7.45pm - 8am sat and sun. Usually get to go early if working the short sunday shift. We do a normal 40 hr week either side, no days off, normal pay. Usually I am fit to drop by the end of it, especially as we are short staffed at the mo and are doing extra 12 hr weekend shifts here and there. Normally rota is 1:3. Gets me down sometimes but at least I know i'm not the only one! As people keep telling me, just think of the money....

there as 4 of us which work weekends on a rota. we have to do 2 full day saturdays (9-5) then 2 half days (8.30- 1), we are closed sunday. whoever is working all day saturday get fridays off. we just get our usual pay for working saturdays, £6.65 we also have to work 1 weekend in 4 oncall.

We do various weekend duties on a rota basis; ranging from a long weekend to just having to work saturday morning.

Long weekend: Friday night from 4pm to Saturday 1pm, then back at 5pm to do Sat. night and Sunday till 5pm.
Short weekend: Sat. either 8am - 1pm or 8am - 5pm and Sunday night 5pm till 11am Monday.
V.short: Sat. 8am - 1pm

To my knowledge we don't get paid extra as it's in our contract to do weekends/nights and the hours don't comply with the governent protocal for 'unsociable' hours...or something vaguely along those lines.

We get time off in leiu, the following week, for the hours worked at the weekend.

We get time and a half pay/double time depending what time we work until. Can work up until 5pm or as late as 11pm (or longer) depending on in patients and emergencies and its rare to have a quiet weekend! Also get a half day usually the following Friday.

Ooh well we do Saturday 9am-12noon, but have to get there a bit earlier. Considering extending our hours til 1pm-2pm, but think we will need another bod in if we do that!

We get paid time and a half for Saturdays. Also do 4 9 hour days in the week, and 1 in 3 Saturdays.

Hiya, our weekends are 9am-5pm both saturday and sunday with on call inbetween straight throught to starting our shift on monday morning at 8am. We work a full 40 hr week the week before but get 2 days off in lieu (thurs &fri) the week after so get a lovely 4 day weekend off. We have an 'on-call allowance' built into our salaries but it really isnt much to shout about! We get paid overtime rates for any work between 5pm and 11pm then get paid a call out fee which is £16 per hour. We also make sure we give time back on the monday for any disturbed rest.
We only have one nurse on at the weekend so it can get ridculously (sp?) busy and we can end up spending alot of time at work!!

hey our weekends are 8am-7pm sat and sun, but it is a very busy 24hr practice and we do get the following friday off
