thanks for this information -i get £250 CPD allowance per year and I would definately be interested in a CAW passport. Kathy B.

The Caw passport sounds a great idea but once looked in the booklet, not a lot happening in Edinburgh compared to the rest of the UK centres, so couldn't justify the price to my boss. I get £200 CPd which I thought was loads till I am now looking at whats available and there are many 1 day seminars that charge that for the day, but I should be grateful that I get £200.

My head nurse was interested in the CAW passport and it does sound really good but we are in deepest darkest south wales and I think the boss doubted we could travel often enough to make it worth the money. Come to Wales!! It would be good maybe if you could just have a practice one so any nurse in the practice could use it?

Thanks for all your feedback so far!

The main reason for my question was to find out if nurses would really benefit from the CAW CPD Passport and it looks as though in some cases you would. Basically The College of Animal Welfare offer a CPD Passport at £285 (cheaper than most 1 day CPD courses!!!) per person and you really can attend as many CPD events with CAW in a year as you like (except assessor and IV training). There really is no catch!

I am just wondering why everyone doesn't have one?????? I realise it would especially benefit those who are located nearer to our centres in Leeds, Huntingdon, Edinburgh and Potters Bar. Speakers range from external specialists and in house lecturers depending on the subject. Our CPD is of great quality and we are constantly trying a new variety of topics. Course include bitesize CPD (2 hour sessions both days and evenings).

And for those of you who are lucky enough to get a CPD allowance from your practice why not let them know about the passport - they will probabley thank you for saving them a lot of money (credit cruch survival and all that). Practice CPD passports are also available.

I get nada, zip, nowt! Not even petrol!

My dinosaur of a boss doesn't seem to think that it's essential even thought I'm the practice Assessor. I went to a free weekend one in London (train ride away) and he wouldn't pay for travel or give me a day off in lieu of it. Not a huge amount I can do to change his mind. I have done a couple of BVNA ones at the £10 mark but can't stretch to the £300 + ones.

I get a £250 per year allowance. Last year i didn't use much at all, but this year i've already used most of it on a 2 level 2 revision days at MYF, i need all the help i can get to pass my exams!! If we want to do a course that costs more than our allowance they will pay if it is beneficial to the practice, so they're pretty flexible.

I get £300 and use my budget each year! If we want to do a course that costs more than your allowance (such as the diploma) the practice will usually fund it as its beneficial. Assessor training is paid for as an extra as its recommended that all QVNs complete this. Hotel/travel fees aren't paid for however but we're quite lucky in this area that CPD is never too far.

When I was in normal practice it depended on what I wanted to go on and how it would benefit the practice, went to BSAVA for a couple of days with one practice then when I was head nurse I went to BSAVA for the whole time and BVNA plus a few free courses or cheap rep courses. My boss paid for everything for BSAVA and my hotel and half my petrol for BVNA as it was something I wanted to do and technically I had had my cpd budget oof £200 for that yr, I pointed out what I could bring back and the pm fought for me as well and he agreed foir that.

Where I am now I have a £500 budget for the year...this includes courses, books, hotels and travel. If I wanted to do the diploma they woulld pay for that but no other cpd whilst completing it.

I generally will only ask for the courses to be paid for as can take the cost of my petrol compared to the course cost for most of them.

I am lucky that this year I have been asked to chair at BSAVA which means I get to go for the whole time and I am a BVNA regional Co-ordinator so I get lots of CPD through my meetings and I get to go to BVNA as well.

I am in a small single vet practice. My Vet thinks its essential I get CPD to keep up with all new drugs and methods. He pays for BVNA and additional evening meetings. Usually he is more keen than me to attend!

My practice are great at paying for cpd, i have been with the practice 2 years, and i went to bvna for 3 days, have been on 3 seperate day courses, my assessor course and im going to bsava with another nurse and one of the vets for 4 days this year!!! Think i am pretty lucky!!!

Nothing so far.. just petrol getting to and from events. Practice has paid for a couple of BVNA ones but at £10 a go I feel this is acceptable to ask for! most of mine comes from free rep talks etc. Am going to congress this year for one day courtesy of the practice so pretty chuffed with that! Would love to do more but don't think practice would pay unless it would increase revenue etc. Can't afford £300 + per course . Wish there was affordable online stuff...
