I have been casually been looking after friends pets (cats/small furries) in exchange for beers/meals etc for a while.
For exra cash for my small holding I want to do it properly, and want to charge. So I know I need insurance, but with whom?

Re: Pet sitting insurance

Thanks guys!!

Re: Pet sitting insurance

I se pet business insurance and I only pay just over £100 a year for what I do so definitely worth getting a quote

Re: Pet sitting insurance

I used to run a pet sitting business, and had business insurance and self employed tax status but I was earning in excess of £150 p/wk. I think if you're looking after other people's pets, even if they are friends of your's you should at least have 3rd party liability, just in case - I used to use Pet Business Insurance. Only prob for you is that I used to have to pay £23 p/mth (3 yrs ago), and if you're only gonna be earning £50 that's gonna take half your wages!!

Yes, even if you earn 1p in a year (or make a loss) as self employed then you have to be registered with the tax man as self employed, and complete tax returns.

If you're gonna be boarding pets at your house you will also need to registered with your local council - round here the annual charge for that was over £100 (3 yrs ago). They will send a man round to check you have all the right equipment to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and the Boarding Kennel Act. I was only looking after dogs inside my house - there may be other things you need to comply with if you're looking after outdoor animals; and possibly higher insurance premiums.

If you don't have all the right paperwork, licences, insurance etc and something goes wrong there are very high penalties in fines so it's not worth the risk trying to do it without.

Sorry, but it does amount to a lot of paperwork and outlay!!!! For £50 p/mth I'd be having a re-think if it was me. Sorry I can't be more optimistic,

K x
