So what is the difference between being self employed or a Ltd company? I am not working with/for anyone else so what would the benefits be of being a Ltd company? I am confused!

A practice that I am hopefully going to do some locum work for are questioning whether I am Ltd or not? How does it affect the practice?

I did use an umbrella company for a bit, but they literally took so much of my wages! Also for one practice had to use a company called gabem, basically so that if i didn't pay my tax, it wouldn't fall on the practice, i guess its some security for them, but again i had to pay a fee. Its kinda annoying when you know its actually your hard earned pennies!

I used Danbro when I was a locum. They charged £20 a week.

I used Eden previousley (through RIG) and they charged £5 each day you worked, upto a maximun of £20 per week. they paid expenses and I never had any problems really, until RIG played up abit with sending timesheets etc. The seemed ok. I think I would be tempted to do my own though in future to save paying the fees :D

Im going to look into that inland revenue course too I didn't know about that :)

CVS are as far as l know the only ones ok albeit a big company who insist on ltd/umbrella/them paying tax/wages. The other ones like it when l say l am ltd but dont ask for it.

You would be better off doing you own stuff and if you run into a company wants special like umbrella ask the vets to do your tax/ni while you cover for them that means the rest of the time you are doing your own books and much better off. I know locums who work like that it works out much better for them.

I do have a friend that only locums and she does all her own invoicing and employs an accountant to do her accounts quarterly I think. She also said that Inland Revenue workshop was really helpful in helping her set it all up and from then on has been easy.

Don't forget as a locum to look into insurance you may need if you do not use an umbrella company as not all practices will cover you. If I was going to locum long term I would prob make myself a Ltd company but for now Eden suits me. Depends on your personal situation I think. Eden provides Employer liability, public liability and professional indemnity insurance free.

all I did was register as self employed (when you do this you are given a number) and was directed to put on the end of my invoices that I understood that I was responsible for payment of my own NIC and IT(this is what employers need to see for locums) - never used an umbrella company, never used an accountant and managed it all myself. You do need to set aside earnings to cover these but it soon becomes a habit. The only benefit of an accountant is finding out about tax that can be claimed back. Anybody who is reasonably intelligent could probably manage it themselves tbh.

If you are going self employed I would recommend you attend the free course run by inland revenue which will help a lot

Umbrella company supposedly run your accounts for you and the place you work for know that the tax has been paid reality is you pay them a fortune dance to their tune and have no life

I work as a ltd company it may seem a pain but well worth it and my accountants are brill. The only drawback is you need charted accountants which are expensive but given what an umbrella co charges a lot better.

I had no end of problems with Eden when I used them outside RIG, I did 8 or 9 weeks locum at one place, faxed all my timesheets/expenses through on time and they would swear blind that they hadn't recieved them, then would swear blind that the practice hadn't paid them despite me speaking to the practice and getting proof of when cheques were written and posted, many of them I posted myself when I did the post run in an afternoon.

They missed expenses off as well.

This was 4 years ago and maybe they have got their act together, but the stress I had with them was ridiculous and not worth the hassle at all, so many phone calls and emails....very very grumpy ones at that!

I use Eden Outsource aswell. Never had any problems with them. They charge £20 per week if you do (I think) 4 (might be 5) consecutive days for RIG. Otherwise it is £25 per payment.

I use Eden, I can't quite remember how much they charge, it's been a while since I used them. Rig recommended them and they have been good. No problems.

As often as possible I do invoice myself but I'm finding lots of places insist on an umbrella company or that I am a ltd company. I don't want to be a ltd company so am forced into using the umbrella company sometimes. I hate using them, it costs me lots if extra money which I really resent!

Do it yourself there is no excuse to it. You get the full amount as opposed to some company who does nothing gets the biggest share.

i use MAC professional solutions, their charge is 5%, but you also have to pay employer NI aswell as the usual employee so if you can sort tax etc yourself you will save a fortune, although some practices will onlypay you via an umbrella company. You can claim expenses too. They are nice at MAC and transfer your money the same day they get it from the practice.
