I know the caculation is bw x dose / strength (mg/ml) = amount to admister in mls
but the vetergesic and clamoxyl tasks are really confusing me, the task sheets give the doses in ml/kg for vetergesic but mg/kg for

Re: Medical nursing practical tasks

And don't forget to check the date or what date it is!

Re: Medical nursing practical tasks

[quote user="rosie111"]

so why do they give you the mg/ml as the strength if you don't need to divide it by that?

They give you the mg/ml because you need it to check that you are selecting the correct bottle/ vial.

Re: Medical nursing practical tasks

Thanks, this makes sense now. I have my practicals tomorrow!

Re: Medical nursing practical tasks

[quote user="rosie111"]

I am presuming that these are 2 separate tasks?

Learn both because some drugs do have ml/kg on them e.g. Synulox inj says on the bottle for dogs 1ml/20kg but you might have a 15kg dog so you would then work out how many ml you would need for 1kg and then multiply that by the BW. With the Clam LA one use the mg/ml if they give it as this gives a more accurate dose.

Also make sure they are asking you how many mls you would give an animal not how many mg's it would need- one of my friends was given this as a mock task at college.

It's easy to get caught out and read it as mg/kg so just be careful and read it carefully in your exam. I had that one in my practicals and it felt weird, like I'd forgotten something! If I remember correctly, they will still tell you the mg/ml required but this is just so that you select the correct preparation rather than to use in your calculation.
