I mean i expect most of us have had the distressing case of some poor cat which has been dosed with doggy flea treatment and is ataxic, fitting etc? no matter where it may have been purchased from as this happens because advice does not come from the checkout! right i will get off my soap-box now. ps not having a GO at any particular store but the v cheapie ones are a nightmare too because no-one there has any idea what any of the ingredients on the packaging actually do!

I have my SQP companion and farm (not that I use it that much). I got it cheap through Harper when I was a student.

I was in Pets at Home not so long ago and I had to interrupt a member of staff giving the complete wrong advice about frontline, when asked by the member of public being sold the item I told her I was a vet nurse and if she wanted accurate advice then she should really purchase it from her vets and not a shop. I did scarper rather fast out of the shop!!!!

So there will be an accident sooner or later if not already!

"Thats exactly the rant I have every time I see Drontal being advertised on the pharmacy in Tescos. I have been tempted on several occassions to pretend I have a puppy and ask for advise to see if they give the correct advice"

You should, and then post the result on here and hopefully BVNA/RCVS can use as an example when they meet VMD

Re: SQP - Our voices are getting heard!

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite VN,"]

In fact why didnt VN Council do anything about this at the time?

And as to AMTRA - a voluntary very small set up when it started, that has created rules that it seems everybody must now abide by - What is the point? what is to stop anybody at the moment setting up their own little group to regulate some aspect of this industry, create a few rules and if you have contacts with the right people in the right places hey presto you have your very own officially recognised body with consultants that make rules that further confuse things, and you then have the ability to extract funding from various sources to pay for all of this. Sorry thats probably very simplistic but thats what it boils down to - yes I am very cynical

Re: SQP - Our voices are getting heard!

Mine lapsed this year as due to life l havent bothered about cpd, l wont renew either.

I agree completely! We get taught about pharmacology and dispensing during our training so it makes sense for us to become SQPs. It's ridiculous that we have to do further qualifications in order to dispense some flea/worm treatment!

Re: SQP - Our voices are getting heard!

I don't think that the status would make a massive change to the nurses in my practice due to the limited small animal products that SQPs can dispense, but my boss has been talking about organising for our receptionists to do the SQP course. Whilst I understand that this is a great opportunity for them, it seems bizarre that they would then be able to dispense drugs that us VN's can't.

I do think that it is a great idea for RVNs to automatically become SQP's. We know enough about the drugs and in a lot of cases probably take more time to discuss administration and side effects of medication than most vets do so why shouldn't we be able to be an SQP?

Re: SQP - Our voices are getting heard!

Woohooo!
