Can nurses (Quailified or Students) perform cystocentesis?? Following a discussion with my colleague we were unsure where we stand on the whole 'entering a body cavity' thing.
The VS we work with is a little old fashioned, not seen him do one in

Re: Cystocentesis......

Whilst employed at a vet university, we used to teach vet students how to do cysto's (and did them ourselves whenever they were on holiday), we also used to place jugular catheters and arterial lines. This was over 10 years ago and I'm not sure if they still do it now. At another uni one of the nurses used to do epidurals but I know that is not allowed anymore.

Re: Cystocentesis......

I've been asked to do it many times but I don't feel comfortable doing it so I tell the Vet that and he does it himself.

Re: Cystocentesis......

i think i was told at college that it was one of those famous RCVS grey areas:

The sentence which is always worth remembering (under F10in the GtoPC ) is:

When a veterinary nurse is negligent the liability is likely to rest with the
directing veterinary surgeon.

Going into a body cavity with a needle should be reserved for those who can then go on to deal with the consequences if a problem is encountered. (Which can happen in the most experienced hands.)

Re: Cystocentesis......

I never have done in the 12 years i have been in practice and have never seen a nurse do it either.

Im not sure of the legalities but i dont think i would be happy for myself to do it, you never know what else you could hit if you dont know what your doing very well and could cause damage to the animal.
