I've been out of work for 3 years now, done a bit of locum here and there but not much, been a stayat home Mum fpr the most part. Anyoldways, much to my amazement I made the shortlist for a VN lecturer position.
So I need to do a 'microteach

Re: A little help with a lecturing job..

Keep it coming guys! All really helpful constructive stuff!

I was thinking of handing out a summary handout after the lesson with citations etc on it with an overview of what the lesson was about. I have spoken to a frend of mine who is a headteacher and he advised asking at the end of the lesson 2 questions. One being what has been the most valuable piece of learning from the lesson and the other being what the students would have wanted me to touch more on. Thus leaving something reflective and something more for them to think about. Silly?

Where I work they really like you to state your learning aims or objectives at the start of the lesson. So you could start by saying "by the end of this lesson, you will be able to... (e.g. identify the indications for IV catheterisation)."

Its happening next Friday. Eek. I have decided to only use one of the sub units and only go over the basics really, trying not to get bogged down in over-information (whilst having the extra info in my head should I be asked a tricky q!).

Starting off with asking the students what they think is are the indications for IV catheterisation and using powerpoint and handing out a spider chart thingy for them to fill in. Hopefully putting the students and myself at ease. Then slipping into access points and moving on fairly quickly to catheter types with pics of butterfly and over the needle with me stating why each one is used. Ending the session with some pics of cellulitus (tho the pic clearly isn't cellulitus as a result of catheterisation...cant find one of infeted catheter site but given that it CAN occur as a complication I though it'd be ok) and extravasation and going on to discuss these complications. Not sure its enough though. Fairly freaked out.

Does it sound like enough? Eeeeeeeek!

Re: A little help with a lecturing job..

Pictures are good! It reinforces what you are trying to tell them.

Make sure that you practice delivering your microteach to someone. You are likely to find that you quicken your pace due to nerves and what started out as a 15 minute lecture soon turns into 5 minutes! You need to practice so that you can pace yourself.

When is it happening? Let me know how it goes! x x

Re: A little help with a lecturing job..

Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

I wanted to do something a bit different from the norm, something to catch the eye of the guys doing the interview. A wee bit fun y'know? Thats why I thought the pics might be good. It gets the students attention (dont know of a VN that doesn't like gore!) and puts across the point that if we dont nurse our patients effectively then the outcome can be pretty harsh.

I agree with the potential for going wrong with the mock leg! So glad you said that!

Re: A little help with a lecturing job..

Hi,

Firstly, congrats on being short-listed!!

You are right in needing to involve the students. Perhaps instead of telling them about indications or risks, you could get them to create a spider diagram identifying them themselves first. I was observed delivering a lecture recently and the observer liked the fact that I did this.

I think that the mock leg has the potential to go wrong and won't show off your lecturing skills very well because I imagine that this will take up the entire 15 minutes.

Good luck with it x
