Just a quick question to all of you with digital radiography,

we get lots of images sent to my practice for reports and some dont seem to be collimated at all, now is this because the plate turns the blank space black or because the collimation has to be to the size of the plate? I just worry about scatter, its still radiation!!

We still have films and an automatic processor here and I do love actually holding a film and processing it your self.

But then again I have been converted to an eBook reader so maybe there hope.....
Sounds to me like people are just whaking the diaphragm right out to expose the whole plate bunch of lazy buggers!!! Even with CR or DR we should use tight collimation as you say its still radiation at the end of the day

and know the unexposed part of the plate does not turn black as far as I'm aware......

Re: Digital xray machines
But then again I have been converted to an eBook reader so maybe there hope.....
Dipping films into developing fluid, water, fixer, being stuck in a dark room for half an hour (can't remember the exact length of time, lol),with horrible stinky poss slightly intoxicating and noxious fluids, then having films hanging up and dripping all over the floor. All that aggro before the vet could even look at the pics and your poor patient getting 2 GAs cos it took so long to diagnose the problem before you could fix it..... yeah, them were the days!!!!!!!!!!

When we went to our local hospital we went to walk-in XRay, not A&E with a letter from our GP. They weren't as busy and routinely give out CDs. The radiographer we saw there said they could probably get my daughter's XRays from Kent but it could take up to 4 weeks!!! It doesn't really matter cos there wasn't much wrong in the end, but cos her elbow was still swollen and she couldn't straighten her arm I was concerned and just wanted them to take another look. I was just surprised they didn't upload the images like we can, but I guess as Nick says that's due to different laws surrounding human XRays. Still, I know now if it ever happens again and we're 100 miles from home to ask for a CDrom!!!!!

As different systems use different readers.

Regards NHS Health Authorities images are stored on a PACS (Picture Archiving Communications Systems). There are a lot more legislation regarding images and security. Images can not be stored on the WWW. You can however send images although we can only do this with local authorities that we have a connection with. We are not able to send via email due the fact that these can be intercepted. We usually encrypt them onto a CD and send with the patient. These can then be uploaded onto another HA PACS system.
