If they can assign you somone who doesnt have a lot of other jobs then it wouldnt be a difficult task really. The head nurse does mine but shes really busy so it difficult to find time

Re: ANA- animal nursing assistant
You need a mentor for both courses.

Thanks for the info. Is there much involved from a mentor's perspective, do you know? I've emailed the job to ask them what they think, but if its too much hassle for them I won't go ahead with it.

Re: ANA- animal nursing assistant

You need a mentor for both courses.

Re: ANA- animal nursing assistant
Will have to run it by them. I can't see them minding though??
Our ANA got a book with her course, the Vicky Aspinall Textbook of Veterinary Nursing, in addition to all the notes they sent out with each module. Make sure you go through any notes carefully as there were quite a few errors.
This must have been the SJSTraining.co.uk course so. How did she find it? I think the caw.ac.uk course seems to be of better calibre, but it involves 600 hours of placement. I've already done in excess of 2,000 hours of voluntary placement, but just concerned about committing to another massive chunk of voluntary time, as I'd really like to get paid at some point since all I do most of the time is mop the floors and answer the phone!!!!!!!!!!

Any advice re: either of these courses? Am going to sign up for one of them this week anyway - its a lot of money for an unwaged volunteer too(£750 for the SJS, £865 for CAW), but at least I won't be looking back in another 6 months thinking that I could have been using yet another chunk of unpaid hours in veterinary to at least get a small qualification, and hopefully increase my chances of someday getting paid, or getting accepted on a student placement...

Re: ANA- animal nursing assistant

Which ANA / VNA courses are people doing? Is it by attendance or by correspondence? I'm going to sign up for a correspondence one to hopefully try to boost chances of getting a SVN next year, or even get a Uni place. I was discussing the possibility of accelerated entry into 2nd year of the BSc, as I already have a couple of degrees, and they seemed to think that the VNA course might help my application.

Re: ANA- animal nursing assistant

I think the ANA Textbook is now out of print unfortunately. You may be able to source a copy second hand.

The BSAVA Textbook of Veterinary Nursing is also very good but you may find it goes into a bit too much detail in some areas for the ANA course.

I found the course a really good way to get started in vet nursing. It doesnt just have to be for people who don't get the grades to go straight onto the VN course. I did it whilst I was waiting for a SVN position and I'm really glad I did as it really helped with the theory side of the VN course. It also gives you a good indication as to whether the VN course is for you. The friend I did the course with had been working as a vet nurse for years without any formal training and the ANA course inspired her to go on to become qualified.
