I saw this article today. It's a horrible story as the dog was scared. What I don't understand is that the owner said the vet said

Re: Another firework mishap
Show dog or not, surely anyone with a dog with a fracture is unlikely to immediately go for amputation as a first choice if surgical repair is a possibility...
I have always said if my dog ever broke a leg, then amputation would be my first choice. She's completely hyper and keeping her quiet and calm is NOT doable, unless I could keep her sedated for the whole recovery period, which is obviously not an option either.

And I agree with not taking the Sun story at face value, they're not exactly known for their factual stories.

Re: Another firework mishap

I don't think the sort of rubbish printed in The Sun should be used to make any judgements on the owner...think 'owner feels strongly about not having dog's leg amputated' doesn't make as good a story! The article doesn't actually say she's going to have the dog PTS if the ex-fix doesn't work - only that the vets have said he may yet need to be put to sleep - maybe they've warned her about potential life-threatening complications like infection as a result of a complex fracture repair? Show dog or not, surely anyone with a dog with a fracture is unlikely to immediately go for amputation as a first choice if surgical repair is a possibility...

Her local paper takes a different angle on the story and doesn't mention euthanasia at all... http://www.wishawpress.co.uk/wishaw-news/local-wishaw-news/wishaw-news/2011/11/09/crufts-champ-s-fireworks-horror-76495-29742300/
