We are in the process of altering our 'on call' situation for our nurses. Currently they are on call on an informal basis and if the vets need help out of hours they just call round to see who can help. This has worked really well for the

Re: 'On Call Pay'

We get a half day in the week (should be the day before the late night but this changes regularly!)

Our late night shift is 945-7 but if we are on our own it is not uncommon to finish about 8. We are on call from 6pm (As usually you are on your own as we haven't enough staff to pair up every day). You can go home though once cleaning etc is done. We come back for 10pm checks on the animals and charge for the time spent there (time and a half).

If we are called out between 6-8pm then we charge time and a half, if we are called out (or still on a call/emergency) between 8pm and 8am we get double pay.

If we are not called out we get a quiet night in (apart from 10pm checks!) and no extra money (again apart from checks at 10!).

You then go and do a full day the day after (Whatever you are rota'd to work!)

Seems to suit me as this is all i have known! It is a nightmare when you are up all night with emergencies and then you have to work a long day afterwards.

Thats how ours works anyway!

Re: 'On Call Pay'

Hi

we dont get a retainer for being on call but get £30ish per call out, if there are in-patients we get average of £10 an animal (different rates depanding on amount of work needed £5-£15ish). Seems to work with us although of course everyone wouuld like more pay! This is not what the client gets charge - we recieve a percentage. Personally I would like to drop the amount the client gets charged and up ours

I thought that was the sort of figure, is this locum rates though, as when i locummed that was the sort of money they paid but that was 10 years ago!!!
Its good to know we weren't that far off the mark though,
Cheers,

Most places paid around £20-25 for a nurse to be on call for the night, then if they were actually called out they would receive pay for the hours that they worked, usually its standard hourly rate. But they would get the £20-25 wether they were called out or not.

Also they would be paid for the 10pm checks, i.e an hours work minimum, but more if it took longer than an hour.

Hope this helps!
