I am a qualified Dog Groomer, and have been having a discussion with fellow groomers as to whether or not emptying dogs anal glands is something we as groomers should be doing. Most of us feel that it is not, moreso from the libel point

Re: Dogs Anal Glands

I have been nursing for nearly 8 and a half years, and im not happy to express anal glands, incase of a problem.
In a healthy dog anal glands should not need emptying, they should naturally express. Only dogs with underlying issues require glands to be manually expressed. The more anal glands are squeezd by owners, groomers or the veterinary profeional, the more likley the poor dog is to have problems, as damage to the gland and the duct occurs.

Personally unless a pet has an underlying issue and is actively showing signs of anal gland irritation, we shouldn't be intefering with normal glands. No offence but I come across too many oners, veterinary staff and groomers who 'routinely squeeze'

Regards

Re: Dogs Anal Glands

I know some owners do them rather than stressing the dog out and bringing them to the surgery. You don't have to be a Vet or a Vet Nurse to empty anal glands, you just have to be sure you know what you're doing and how to express them properly. If done incorrectly you could really damage the gland and cause a lot of follow up problems.
