As I said before I'm not upset by "Newbies" passe, more the tone of some posts (lack of manners to me) and to explain that, unfortunately I am going to have to quote exact posts, which I didn't really want to do.

For example - this from a Newbie the other day. First ever post, very friendly and polite.

"Hey there,

I'm wondering if anyone on these forums has studied at Easton College, nr Norwich?" He then explains why he asked the question and ends with

"Thanks for reading!"

Nothing wrong with that at all, but compare that to the following first ever post from another new member:

"What kind of instruments need sterilisation in a veterinary practice? But not by autoclave.

and whats a scavenging system?"

That was the complete post. No "hello", not even a please or thank you. That is what has upset me so much. I cannot abide rudeness. Now some of you guys may see it differently, perhaps call the poster "direct", "straight-talking", etc and that's your prerogative. I don't.

Email and forum posting can be very difficult mediums to speak over - sometimes things people type do not come across as they intended and not how they would speak in every day life. I dare say this lass is lovely to speak to, but the language and nature of her post was unfortunate, appeared rude (to me) and even a little aggressive in nature (again, to me). I stress again, it was this that I took offence to,especially as it was a first post, not the fact that she is a "Newbie". Had she began with a "Hi this is my first post, I'm an SVN and would like some help with my college work, please", it wouldn't have been a problem and I would never have started this thread.

A little introduction would not mean putting all your details online, either. Just "I'm an SVN / RVN / VCA other interested party etc". No-one wants whole life-stories, it's just nice to know who we're talking to. You're right in saying that if she had come into the practice as a client that she wouldn't have had to tell you her name, address, etc, but she would have at least said "hello, could you tell me," and "please".

For those of you who feel the forum is "cliquey" I'm sorry you feel that way. If you join in the conversation you'll soon discover we're not that way at all - we're actually quite a friendly bunch! I think it may look as if some people "dominate" conversations because there's not that many of us who are on here regularly. We all need input from a wide range of people, that's how we learn, and the more of us that join in the better. I am simply asking if you're new (or have been reading for years but haven't posted before) then let us know a little bit about you.

Difference is this isnt a vet surgery that is a business establishment. This is a forum a lot of us have become friends and either met or just support each other. it is a social group that is based around a subject as are all forums and while we are happy to answer q it is also polite to know more about who you are talking to. Yes you could lie about yourself some do dont actually see the point no you dont have to put up any thing but it helps to be polite you would walk in to a business and at least give some basic info and saypolitley l was wondering if you could help over/with/about...some would walk in and demand but they would find that the result is met in return the same way with a barely veiled rudeness.

All we are asking is that if you are going to post you are not a ghost even some info is better than nothing l am not asking for a profile like mine but basic info is a good start. Mind you it is probably because l have spent years on forums run them, owned them and been a member so l feel different about them. However l know a lot of others feel the same.

Also a business is face to face so you can judge better than you can on a forum. l now await the howls of outrage that l am crass and rude and nasty but to be honest l am past giving much of a .... l have enough real trouble in my life which you would not even be able to conceive of so shall leave you to it good day

I have been a member for some time, but have posted very little (hence still 'newbie'). The few posts I have written have been heavily misunderstood and overshadowed, therefore its very discouraging.

Please also think about it from a 'newbie' point of view - there are people on web forums who dominate conversations and can be disparaging about opinions and form cliques which can appear intimidating to new contributers. There's a thread on here about a product relating to firework anxiety and the person who started it had his/her authenticity doubted and discussed until it was found out that s/he was genuine and had a genuine concern. It's an open membership site so perhaps the emphasis should be on welcoming newbies??

Thanks, Caro. Yes, actually writing biographies would probably be better, cos as you say the intro will get lost in the list of posts. It could be generic and wouldn't have to name places of work or even district for those who wish to remain anon.

I think I was really moaning about respect and manners, not newbies in general. After all we were all newbies once, and most of us had the decency to say hi before asking the other forum members to do their coursework for them!!! Manners cost nothing, and, as they say, maketh the man (or woman in many cases on here!!)

I just think it's politeness to say something along the lines of "Hi I'm so and so, doing training at wherever - would anyone be able to help me out with whatever question is part of my coursework at the moment please" rather than the posts that have been on here recently which start without an introduction or even a "hello", merely a "What is.......". That is what has annoyed me. Maybe it's my generation - we were brought up without email / text so asking questions would have been face to face. You would never go up to someone you don't know and just fire questions at them now would you?

Some people with the "Newbie" status though could well have been here longer than you have and just havent posted very often so it could well be that they did introduce themselves a long time ago but you never saw it. I have been on this forum since 2001 I think, and I rarely post but read alot.
