My feeling exactly! I don't like having one product in (be it a brand of food, flea tx etc) and selling that because you are a practice for that item. I want to advise people on the best product for thier pet. I used to work at a RC selling practice. If someone walked in to a nurse clinic and their dog was on eg JW and was doing well on it, I would never advise them to change. If they are feeding a good, balanced diet and the animal is healthy on it, then why change? The same with flea treatments etc. Anyway, will shut up now before I ramble on.

It just goes back to what I've already said, I will happily recommend products in clinics that I think the animal needs, but I would do that regardless of any incentive scheme...........................

hiya

I read these posts with a lot of interest as I would like to develop a really good scheme for nurses to be rewarded for using/recommending RC through clinics etc. Coming from a nursing background myself I am also mindful of when and where you advise products and for the benefit of the pet - with that in mind i am looking at the recommendation of RC through weight clinics/puppy parties/senior clinics.
What are your thoughts on this kind of reward scheme?

Bonus schemes are no incentive tome. If the client needs a product, I will advise them accordingly, if they don't need it, I am not going to persue them to buy something they don't need. I don't see how that is in the animals best interest.

I think staff that work hard should be rewarded anyway, regardless of targets. I am not, and never will be a sales person.

At my first practice we had a bonus scheme of £50 extra in wages if we had no days off sick. At my second practice we had £1 for every £15 we sold on worm/flea treatments and at my current practice if we meet our targets and work hard as a team we have a nice dinner and a night out.

We have a profit share scheme. If a profit has been made over the last quarter then we get a set %. That way we all work to better the practice and its not based on individual sales. Plus it's not just based on sales its overall, so i believe it makes us less wasteful and more economical.

We each get a quarterly set bonus but we earn it as a team. Its never sales related as were a new practice last time it was to register a set number of clients in that quarter which we smashed so then our boss took us out for dinner too. This time its just to keep up the good work....I think he may struggle to come up with something every quarter so im not sure how that will work in the future but it is quite a nice thing to have going.

They could just give everyone a pay rise or a one-off bonus!!

I hate the idea of a sales related bonus. Especially if it is related to turnover as this would encourage people to reach for the most expensive product rather than the most suitable one. (And to fight to work front of house, as you can't sell stuff while you're doing an anaesthesia!)

Surely we are medical professionals, not commission based salesmen?

This is a really good idea

I'm not against bonus schemes (although have never worked in a practice where they have been used). I think it is a nice way of the 'boss' sharing the profits they make from the business. I never advise a product or treatment to a client that I dont believe will be a beneift to their pet and I believe that it is our duty to advise and educate about the 'best possible treatment' (whilst taking care not to make the client feel bad if this is what they would like to do but cant afford).

I really struggled when I first started doing nurse clinics as I felt like I was presuring the owners when asking if they use flea/worm treatment/vaccinate/brush their dogs teeth, but I then realised that these are all things that I do for my own dog so I shouldn't feel bad advising owners to do it for their dogs too.

Agreed No bonus is really going to change that! All it makes me do is be sure to mention it, if they don't want it I will never push.

We have just had a new bonus scheme started for the person who sells the most worm and flea treatments over a certain amount before 31st December to win a Camcorder that was donated to the practice. We don't have these often so it is all novel and exciting for us at the moment!

One thing that our bosses did that I wouldn't recommend is to add a list of top sellers over the last 12 months - although it has no bearing on the competition the people at the bottom of the table have decided there is no point taking part as they obviously aren't very good at it!
