I was just wondering if you have ever had this problem in practice and if there is any successful way we can avoid it happening again. If this is not licensed in the UK how can they do this??

The rep gave no information that this 'drug' would interact with any other medication and certainly gave no contraindications for its use!

We've also had kittens get their heads stuck too- again being released with no problems.
We did have a dog escape from a kennel overnight once! We have some big walk in kennels which have gated fronts with vertical bars. The dog in question managed to bend two bars and squeeze himself through. The first nurse in was greeted to a rather large german shepherd wandering around the waiting room, no damage to the dog but lots of scratches on doors and he'd managed to open a box of chews

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...

the greenhouse/birdroom that I dismantled earlier in the year - a lage part of it was made of this

The dogs are then usually moved to a different type of cage.

The first was my own dog who I was able to rescue easily as she is a Chihuahua, that was years ago but the other two I have seen were both within this last year. I was struggling to free one of them and was seriously contemplating calling the fire brigade but it managed to get free. It is a worry if the kennels is not supervised.

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...

I have seen this hapen twice. First time a few years ago collie bit on bars then couldnt reopen her mouth wide enough to free herself - luckily kennel with 2 doors so went and sat in and held her head as she was trying to pull back and worried she may fracture the jaw - ended up sedating her and fire brigde had to come and cut the door as even sedated couldnt remove! Second time a few weeks ago a staffie chewing bars in the dog run outside and did the same luckily freed himself quite quickly - just as I was about to try to vault over the 6ft run wall!!!

It is a concern. We only have small kennels with solid doors and even then find they get quite warm after a while. Our dog run is square mesh so can happen whatever the shape!

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...
Luckily I have never seen this happen .

What about using Zylkene/Calmex. Calmex may be more useful as it can work within 30-60 minutes of administration. I am starting to advice Zylkene use a few days before admission now, not everyone takes it up, but I suppose we could use Calmex instead on admission for those that dont.

We also have a DAP plugged in, but I not sure how useful this is.

It doesnt solve the problem of the kennel doors, but it may help de stress the patients.
I've heard a rumour that calmex does not interact well with some other drugs well (can't remember which ones) so might not be the best idea.

We have several daps plugged in, you could always try having a few bandannas that you can spray with dap and place on the stressy dogs
speak to the Vetplus rep/vet. There are several possible contraindications with calmex beacuse it is a sedative and works on the same part of the brain as some other sedative drugs Calmex has Piper Methysticum in it which is a plant extract which acts as a muscle relaxant, sedative and as an anxiolytic. If you speak to the techinical team they can tell you all about it.
To be honest I will never use it where I am but I didn't want people to go about using it and then having potential problems when mixing it with other drugs. From the literature I have seen they aren't very forth coming about the possible contraindications.

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...
Thank you Emma, I will see if we can recommend this in future. We have a DAP in place already. Oddly, until the op, in fact until the 5 minutes this happened in, he seemed less stressed than most of the animals we see! Typical!

Our bars were rectangular hence the problem, he could get in sidewards but not the right way up!

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...

Luckily I have never seen this happen .

It seem to be the bars that are square rather than rectangle (if you get that)

One dog we manadged to turn/pull/push him free. Another we ended up sedating and having to cut the bars!!! this one was then put into another kennel and the plastic (heavy duty, 1 inch thick) kennel divider was put against the inside of the kennel door.

The most recent one was a standard poodle which got its top jaw stuck!! it had never been left on his own let alone in kennels. but with the panic of his GDV this wasnt mentioned to us. So at 2.30am when i heard an almighty racket i went in to find him screaming and stuck. Luckly got him free but he had already cut his nose very badly and pulled out a canine thank god th eowners were so pleased we had saved the dogs life they wern't too bad and they also apologised for not telling us.

I do get lots of naughty dogs (mainly adolesent labradors) chewing the bars and normally a strict NO! and a tap on the offended part poking through will stop them doing it any further.

it is the worse thing when it happens, so i do sympathise. its mainly the dog panicing that i hate.

Re: Dog stuck in kennel door...

In 20yrs I've seen this happen twice in practice.
