Regarding the south of Ireland, I am not sure to be honest. If you leave it with me a day or so, I will try and get some information for you.

From past memory, quite a few years back, rumour was that nurses in the South werent as well treated as in the North. Its just what I heard, I dont know but I will try and find out for you.

Re: vet nursing in ireland - any good?

Thanks heaps Saskia

With an irish visa, i would be restricted to working only in the south. Do you think that would be much the same? I know it does vary from practise to practise like you say

Guess now i just have to decide what to do! My fiance has a job if he wants it in Essex, so ideally i'd rather be near him, but if i cant work i think i might go insane!!!

Re: vet nursing in ireland - any good?

Thank you Sandra!!

Hi Kiwi,

I work in a mixed practice in Northern Ireland. I am Head/Senior Nurse or whatever you like to call me!! I am the only QVN in my practice and have a student doing her NVQ Level 2. My duties in practice are quite varied. I think it very much depends on the vet you work with. I do all sorts of things in my practice -

iv catheters, fluid therapy, x-ray, pre-med working out, induction agent (have ready for vet), all consult bandage changes etc.

I guess I pretty much do the same as all my fellows on the forum in terms of practical work. I work in a lovely rural practice so thats nice for me. I worked in a hospital in Belfast before where the nurses were very much hands on as well. I am sure like England/Scotland, it varies from practice to practice and from vet to vet as to what nurses are 'allowed' to do. My vet is happy for me to be more practical and hands on as it lets him get on with the other stuff he has to do like being in theatre etc.

I am guessing that if you are in a rural practice like me as opposed to working in the city (Belfast/Bangor etc) you may not get as well paid as a nurse in solely small animal practice.

If I can be of any further help, pm me or reply on this thread.

Hope this helps you.

Re: vet nursing in ireland - any good?

Saskia will be on shortly, she is Irish and works in practice, so I am sure she will fill you in
