Well done sal. Good on you! Seeing the pathetic conditions some nurses have to put up with in this country makes me sad and angry. Glad I went back to management, maybe I can help make a difference as well from the inside....slowly but surely...

Yes I agree there should be some standardisation, and I know that this would be difficult to put into place (difficult but not impossible). There have been steps to standardise training (NVQ) there have been steps to standardise the work place (practice standards scheme) so now it is about time there were steps taken to at least try and standardise working conditions and rates of pay. When there is a standard set that all nurses should be either qualified or actively training towards qualification - I feel that will be the real clincher, then I feel a lot of the other stuff will fall into place

I know we dont work in the NHS,so in theory, we shouldnt be basing ourselves on a NHS system of bands and grades and I know that there can be great differences in practices and practice incomes and it isnt as simple as setting bands - in fact all I have heard for 20 years plus is excuses as to why this or that wouldnt work. There is far more effort put into finding excuses than there is into finding solutions.

I think VN salery/conditions should be more structured like human nurses using a banding system (i know that a few universities use this system)

no I am very strongly opposed to unions - for me the answer would lie in changes to the Veterinary Surgeons Act which is up for review and I feel will be the best chance, although a private members bill even if it didnt get through would raise quite a bit of awareness.

I was very disappointed that the article in the Vet Times on unions - well it was all about vets. Its ok saying nurses could join (another article) but the fact that nurses were mentioned in my opinion as an afterthought - what does it tell you about this union if it comes off ? I know what it tells me.

no way - I am anti union. Nothing may come of this but at least I have tried. I couldnt make a difference from the 'inside' when I was working but as an outsider I dont have to worry about bosses etc.

I used to have the reputation of being the ratcatchers bitch so maybe its time to get a bit of the fire back!
