Hi All !!!

I'm a vet tech I loved to be a part of this forum. This forum discusses productive and useful information for veterinary professionals. As far as the salary is concerned I think it depends upon the nature of the job, the geographical are and the education level. The research positions offer higher salary as compared to the work in private clinics or animal hospitals. Also those vet techs who have a bachelors degree get higher wages as compared to the ones with only an associate degree. And I think if not for all but for most vet techs, the salary potential is worth of their cost of education.

Ive always found the London/South east England area easiest to get locum jobs but maybe Ive just been lucky?

In terms of pay, Ive known very experienced locums (ie over 5 years qualified, several years locum experience) get up to £15 per hour but it depends a bit on self employed vs angency, past locum experience ect. Ive also known unqualified VN locums get paid £12 p/h. It also depends on local area; if you are locumming in a rich/expensive area then it is fair to ask for more £ per hour. Similarly, if you are SE and doing all your own CPD, registration costs, accounts, admin ect then go ahead and ask for more; most agencies charge practices per day to 'loan' one of their VNs on top of paying the VN so its fair to charge a bit more if you are cutting out the middle man.

I worked for Recruit4Vets for six months as a locum and I got £11 a hour. It seems to be the going rate - £10-12 a hour and that may increase depending on your experience. You can demand more once you are more experienced but down here, jobs are far in between in London so you can't afford to be too pushy regarding pay.

I have never really understood why the vetsnow rate is so low to be quite honest. I did some cover for them in 2004 and again in 2010 - their rate of pay has never altered even tho their conditions and the amount the client is charged has (in the case of client charges quite considerably). I know everybody has overheads and has to make a living but that also applies to the nursing staff too!

£10 - 12/hr seems to be the standard rate. If you`re talking about out of hours work for someone like `vets now` then the locum rate is set at £10 /hr though if they really desperate you can sometimes get more
