Snuggles has been on Lapizole for 9 days now and has finished a 10 day course of Meloxicam today. When the vet saw him he had a head tilt, one eye was half closed, his upper lip on one side was dropy and his ears where at different heights.

The head tilit is still present but the other signs appear to have gone. Just wondering in everyones experience how long it takes for them to recover (i know sometimes they don't recover fully!!)

Snuggles sends his love to everyone

Re: Off colour Bunny

No that's fine, all advice is greatly received. In the course paperwork it suggested 0.4ml/kg so it works out for hime at a dose for a 12kg dog which to me seemed to be quite a lot - but obviously not, it needs to be this high.

I just wonder how much client awareness there is on the problem?

Re: Off colour Bunny
she suggested using Meloxicam aswell so I started him on that today (after a chat and a calculation session with the boss)
I hope you don't mind me just adding my comment here - make sure you are giving enough! Rabbits need approx 0.6mg/kg (and can go up to 1mg/kg) which is dramatically different from cats and dogs. For example, a 2kg rabbit given DOG oral metacam would need at least a dose of 6kg once (or even twice) daily to be effective. I have had a few second opinions where vets have given rabbit the same as cat doses which is pretty much homeopathic!!!

Re: Off colour Bunny

Sorry to hear about you loosing your bunny.

I am hoping that I have caught the problem early enough and that he makes a full recovery. I took him on about 6m ago from the RSPCA as he was 1 of 22 negletted bunnies :(. Didn't treat him with 9 days Panacur and have never treated my other bunny who is 2 1/2 years (he is living with my parents though so not an in contact rabbit - they hate each other!!) That picture was taken a while ago.

Hopefully he will make a full recovery but I think from now on I will be doing the same protocol as you. I was told at the rabbit advance nursing course that it doesn't offer any prevention treatment which is a bot concerning. Do you use the Panacur or Lapizole??

Will keep you posted on his progress

Re: Off colour Bunny

Thats great news, he looks like a very happy bunny! I lost a bunny to E.Cuniculi:( He didn't have head tilt, but more urinary symptoms and also problems with his sight. We tried our hardest to save him, but he was too far gone. I had rehomed him from someone who no longer wanted him after his mate had died-I now believe from E.Cuniculi too. Its always a good idea to treat any new bunny you take on for it just in case they have been exposed. I now give my bunnies a 9 day course once or twice a year as a precaution.Good luck and I hope he continues to improve x

Re: Off colour Bunny

Hi everyone who has given me advice on E Cuniculi treatment. Took my little man to work yesterday (managed to grab the car for a change instead of pushbike)!! Our vet confirmed my fears that it was E Cuniculi but thankfully only the early stages. I had already started him on the panacur regime - which is hated and fought me all the way when trying to administer so I have now changed him over to Lapizole - which is likes. My vet was quite happy to just do that and see if things resolved, but I had already emailed a lady who ran a Advanced Nursing course for Rabbits and she suggested using Meloxicam aswell so I started him on that today (after a chat and a calculation session with the boss) which again he enjoys the taste of so fingers and toes tightly crossed!!

Thank you again for you support and advice, Snuggles and I will keep you posted on his progress

As rabbits can go down hill quickly. It could be a middle ear infection but would definately try treating with pancur just in case. You know your own rabbit and if he just isn't himself then best to get him checked out. Hope he gets better soon X
