I first enroled as a trainee VN in Sept 1991, and left before qualifying in 1996 - to have babies x5 (not all in one go!!!!!). I'm starting the BSc course tomorrow and gonna be re-enroling. I've dug out my old green book and student record card with all my old enrolement details on.

I'm sure you will be fine! I first enrolled with the RCVS in 1999, yet only just qualified in Jan 2011 - and yes I had a baba somewhere in the middle!

Personally I had to re-enroll not once, but twice, as enrolment lasted for only 5 years. The first time this just meant I / my employers had to pay the re-enrolment fee. I'd passed 1st year no probs but had moved around a lot. I'd even started 2nd yr before leaving an running back home to Ma when I found out I was pg. Then I had my baba, so a bit of a gap inbetween practices.

I had to work at my new TP for 4 months, then get an assessor to write to the RCVS stating that they agreed I was up to the standard of a L2 SVN who had passed exams etc, then, despite it being almost 10 yrs later, I was able to start my L3 !

Sailed through both portfolio, theory exams and practicals, despite the gaps in training! Not sure how I managed it lol!!

Re: pregnancy during vet nurse training

I enrolled as a SVN back in July 2006 and was due to start my college course in Jan 2007 when I found out I was pregnant in the Oct. I worried constantly about this but I spoke to the RCVS and they were really great with me. They advised that I postpone the college course and concentrate on my portfolio until I left for maternity leave, when i left I sent my portfolio into my VNAC to be certificated so that I didnt lose all my work. On my return to work I started college and had a great advantage as I could concentrate on my college work rather than worrying about my portfolio. I will admit it was tough juggling a young child, work and college work but was well worth it when I qualified (I qualified the day before I left for mat leave with my second child lol).

Im not sure how this would be affected with the new VN course but definately ring the RCVS/VNAC/BVNA for advice. I found the direct.gov.uk website really helpful for maternity leave advice. There are some rules regarding your job being available when you return to work but cannot remember what they are off the top of my head. Try not to worry too much its not good for you or baby.

Re: pregnancy during vet nurse training

If you are a BVNA member contact the Free Legal helpline to give you the most accurate advice.
