I know that no body can tell me what I should do but I could us some advice!!
I graduated from University as a VN in June last year. In January I took on a job as a lecturer but am now having doubts. I am also working at an out-of-hours

Re: Job dilemma

Check how long you have to stay working with the college after completion of your pgce to 'pay it off' assuming you even have to, everywhere is different...

Re: Job dilemma

Tracey and Jamie, thank you both for your advice! Although you both seem to think that the money is good in my current job - it is not! I have friends in practice working less hours and earning more money.

Jamie, in answer to your question I am teaching various aspects of nursing - I teach some A&P, some stuff on ethics and animal welfare and also about nursing models, etc. What I teach is very factual and therefore I don't feel that amount of experience would affect my ability to teach these subjects.

Staying put certainly has its benefits - i'll get my pgce for one thing. Ummm....still not sure what to do!

Re: Job dilemma

Im with Tracey. You could always locum in your holidays (I assume as a lecturer you get about 7 weeks?) and see how you feel about stuff? On the other side of the coin, what are you lecturing? When I was at college we had a VN lecturer who had barely spent any time in practice and so wasnt all that helpful at times.....although a lovely teacher. It will be harder than you think cutting back your wage. I accepted a lower wage about 5 years ago as I was desperate to move to a busier practice and gain more experience. It was really hard and I had to take a second job for a while. Im only just on now what I was 5 years ago. I guess it depends on what your priorities are but sounds to me like you could maybe manage a bit of the best of both worlds :)

Re: Job dilemma

I don't want to seem shallow, but remember that you are unlikely to earn as much in practice as you probably have in teaching, even if you went into referral. The money is better in referral, but now you have had 9 months of a decent salary, how would you feel about losing a few £K a year? Looking at most of the referral jobs, they seem to offer between £18K-£20K, more for night nurse positions.

I think I would agree that you should stick at the new job for a while, especially if you enjoy it- I'm sure you know, thats worth a lot. You have the rest of your career to do other things and having the teaching qualification may open door to other jobs in the future. Whats to stop you going back into practice in 5 years time if you still feel this way? As long as you keep your hand in with the OOH work and CPD etc. But if you leave the teaching job, an opportunity like that might not come up again so easily.

Just my opinion, though, but gives you things to think about.

Re: Job dilemma
have you thought of asking to spend a week or so in referral centre to see how it is and whether you'd enjoy it. Maybe out of term time??
I spent one day at a referral centre at really enjoyed. The problem I have right now is that I need to make a decision quickly! I have actually handed in my notice but they want me to stay so I have a review organised in a couple of weeks time when I need to declare my final decision.

Maybe rather than rushing my decision I should stick around at least until the end of the academic year? Lots to think about!

Re: Job dilemma

try listing the pros and cons for each on a sheet of paper (and I mean all the pros and cons) and see if it makes your decision and clearer

Re: Job dilemma

have you thought of asking to spend a week or so in referral centre to see how it is and whether you'd enjoy it.
