I'm lucky if i meet mine once a week for a few minutes but we never really dissuss things ? Just looking for some advice on

Re: Tutorials...

The training practice (practice principal) signs the RCVS student enrolment form to state that the student "will be supported in practice and assessed at reasonable intervals by a suitably qualified clinical coach, and be given at least three hours of planned, active teaching/assessment in clinical practice per week." It is a recommendation that the student has a tutorial (documented) every 7-14 days to plan NPL coverage, set targets for the student to work to etc. and review previous targets set, this also helps to demonstrate that this 3 hours of active learning/training is occurring. Obviously certain cases cannot be planned, but ideally students should focus on areas that they are working on at college to gain the underpinning knowledge that goes hand in hand with the practical aspects, i.e. radiography, anaesthesia.

Hope this helps

Re: Tutorials...

Thanks for all the advice, sorry it took so long to write back. I was back at college and had a chat with my CC when i came back and its been alot better since then. I wouldn't say its the 3hrs a week but she has made the rest of the vets aware to talk me through things and try to go over something new each day which is good :) so im writing it all down in my diary and trying to keep on top of my NPL... hopefully its all up from here !

Thanks again ! x

Re: Tutorials...

I thought it was 3 hours per week in which you were to have a tutorial (which could be 5mins) and the rest of the time was for on the job training with logging the time. A tutorial every other week seems a long time to wait to discuss things.

This is going back to when we were assessors so has clinical coaching changed so much?

Re: Tutorials...

You only need to do an actual tutorial every 2 weeks, but should spend at least 3 hours per week working with your student so that you can teach. They should also be keeping a reflective diary so that they can write exactly what they are doing and learning and this does not have to be all with the CC.

Re: Tutorials...

Im discusted that your not getting the time. Having been an assessor for many years and now a clinical coach i know how difficult it is to find time on the rota to fit this in.

However speak to your clinical coach about it, can more time be found on the rota? (fortunatly i do the practice rota so i make the time!)

if nothing chages then you must go and talk to your college about it.

sadly this happens so often and not many students do get the required 3 hours due to time available in practice.

Re: Tutorials...

Your college should be insisting on you getting more time with your tutor. The 3 hours can be teaching you on the job, so if your not getting any sit down time it can hold you back a bit. Talk to your coach and see if there's anyway of getting more time and if not then speak to your college so they at least know your situation.

Work unfortunatly will always take a priority but you should be able to get a little more time.

Re: Tutorials...

In an ideal world you (as a student) are ment to get at least 3 hours of studying each week...

The tutorial can/should be a mix of the CC asking how you're getting on in practice, how your studying is going and going through your NPL log.

Obviously it depends on how busy the practice is...

I don't think tutorials are needed for your NPL but are advised for your external verifier!? I could be completely wrong!
