Just wondering the general consensus on this? How many "experiences" are people logging before they claim competence in something? I'm finding I haven't had time to log every time I've done something but then feel competent in it, despite

Re: NPL - how many logs before claiming competence?

it depends until you feel confident, i try and get a dog, cat and atleast 1 exotic in there until i claim competancy :)

Re: NPL - how many logs before claiming competence?
I'm finding I haven't had time to log every time I've done something
You dont need to log every time you do a task but I think what they focus on is that you have a range of experiences e.g cleaning kennels - I would try and make sure my student has logged cleaning of different size kennels, incubators, isolation, different species (hay from rabbits disposed of vetbed cleaned etc) rather than kennel from bitch spay x 10.

Re: NPL - how many logs before claiming competence?
That can't be possible... they can't have done all the theory yet!? How can you sign them off without the knowledge?!

I'm currently on the transitional course, December finish. we have half the NPL to complete in one year- tough!!! By the time the college got everything sorted most of us didn't start the NPL or have our log in until march and it's due finish on oct 8th. I was trying to log 5 things per task, the college pulled me up on this and said 'why?', apparently one or even none is sufficient. If your clinical coach wishes to sign you off straight away this is acceptable and I suppose easily achieved on everyday tasks. My cc and I have made sure we have atleast one thing logged though because I'm too worried that it won't be counted if I have no evidence on there! And I also think there should be evidence to refer to, too! Obviously tasks that need more things logged due to my lack of experience or confidence have had multiple things logged. But since then the college have really left us alone and haven't commented on a lack of evidence or anything. :-/ hope that helps?? Check with your QA assessor if one is ok.

Re: NPL - how many logs before claiming competence?
Agree with above. But I did get pulled up for signing off student as competent in some tasks before my student declared she was competent. They log til they feel competent and then CC decides and signs off.

Personally I hate the word competent.
I signed my student as competent before she declared she was for over half of her NPL and they never said anything!

Shes quite down on herself and never thinks shes competent at anything when she is, if i hadnt shed never have got it done! At the end of the day if you feel shes competent then she is.

Im a clinical coach and my student for example will log lots of handling as not confident with this but may only do 1 -2 cleaning of a kennel. It depends on how confident your CC thinks you are as it comes down to him or her saying yes you can do it. Sit down and discuss this with CC at next tutorial.

Hope that helps.
