Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners, edited by Trevor Turner used to have a section that summed up the developments in Veterinary Nursing from the Canine Nurses Institute up to the introduction of the schedule 3 ammendment and a little beyond.

The BVNA recently published lots of 'archive' material, I seem to remember, in th VNJ (Veterinary Nursing Journal) as part of the 50th Anniversary. Contact the BVNA and scrounge some stuff/info??

I had a green book In fact I still have it - and it's not that old!!!!! 1995 the last entry

The uniform has changed a little - we had green/white striped dresses (very practical ) with a black webbing belt for 1st yr trainees and a grey one for 2nd yrs who'd passed Part 1. (Note we were "trainees", not SVNs).

If it's of any interest to your survey, I didn't qualify under the "old" system as I left to have babies and I'm going back into it now - starting in 2 wks time on the BSc course at the RVC so I may be able to offer you comparissons, although the course is gonna take me 4yrs!!

p.s. I can assure you even those of us who are old enough to have had a 'green book' which is some-what similar to a skills log just on paper still had to sit exams. We had written exams (both short answer and MCQ) plus within our practical exams we had a section of oral questions.

All I remember is the little green book which was before portfolio... I never had one but I know my old head nurse had them and as it all came about when they changed the portfolio over to the NPL.

Good luck with it all though. it would be interesting to know the history more for ourselves as well!!!

"All speakers' presentations and biographies may be downloaded from the 'Related documents' box - top right" - is how the document end... and I know I have downloaded these and looked at them...

But for some reason there is no 'Related documents' box on the page... might be worthwhile getting in touch with the VN dept at the RCVS and see if they can help...

RCVS website... there's lots of stuff on there about the beginning of Vet Nursing... and I think you can download peoples presentations for the special Jubilee day that they had... I'll try to find the link and post it later x
