Unfortunately I missed the closing date for the abbey vets vacancy but thanks for the heads up all the same. I have since found a couple of other north east practices that are hiring and have applied, fingers crossed.

I have been thinking about the London vacancy/interview and decided not to go or take it. This is not ungratefulness to them, or even about the practice. Fact is I only have one friend and no family (except for my furry family) and she lives up here in Yorkshire and I don't want to travel far away for so long whilst I train. I would miss her. So I am looking at Yorkshire/Lancashire now and sending my CV and cover letter to every training practice in the region as listed on the bvna website. And I have also managed to secure some work experience in a mixed practice, so excited.

Thanks for all your help and I wish it was with more desirable news. Having a qualification certainly looks a lot better on the old CV than not, regardless of what practice you worked at whilst you trained. Training places are insanely hard to come by, you only have to read the posts on here to see that.

I work for a large chain and our college has achieved pass rates above the national average for the past 2 years at least, so look beyond the practice name.

Re: bad practice prospects.

Abbey House Vets in Morley, Leeds were looking. I have no reason to stay anywhere so I apply everywhere, even abroad, I want to get into veterinary nursing so badly. Hopefully someone will eventually give me the break I so desperately need.

Thanks for all your input and advice.

Wish me luck!

Re: bad practice prospects.

find a cheap hotel and make it a sightseeing weekend/weekday maybe? You can get them quite cheap if you book in advance. Moving is a fun prospect but is worth it when looking for a student nurse position. I did the same, move location. Training places are hard to come by and I was so convinced this was what I wanted to do, I moved to get a job.
I would never judge someone based on this sort of information. I would like to think I am a good judge of character and can judge a person on their individual merits and not based on the reputation of the practice they trained with. Especially in regards to an SVN's who have little managerial input.

The only thing I would advise caution in, would be to check the training you would be receiving, as some of the "chain Vets" do their own in-house training and this is not recognised by the RCVS, so will not lead to RVN status.

Good luck!

Agree! Sometimes what you see in the press is nothing like what you see in front of your face. Often these opinions are very 1 sided. You could give this company a chance. Ask to see the pass rates for students, this should tell you if they are any good at their training! If the interview is at a practice you might get to meet some of the staff.

Company's are made up of lots of staff, and there are always a few bad eggs anywhere. I Imagine if somewhere has had "bad press" they often try harder to prevent these problems happening again. It's a shame that in the lab services area, members of staff who may have been kind to the animals are penalised because of those bad eggs who weren't, and makes me think about how shallow some people are. Don't tar everyone with the same brush!

Go to the interview and see how you feel. You might get offered a job, you might not. I know of people who have worked for a well known chain, and have gone on to work in referal places, become head nurses and practice managers in other places, it hasn't been a blot for them! It's all about what YOU put into it, in my personal opinion. If you haven't done anything wrong, why do you have to be ashamed?

Good luck at the interview

Re: bad practice prospects.

I would never judge someone based on this sort of information. I would like to think I am a good judge of character and can judge a person on their individual merits and not based on the reputation of the practice they trained with. Especially in regards to an SVN's who have little managerial input.
