Help - have VMD inspection coming up.

Are there any SOP guide lines or copies of forms out there

Do all drugs require the batch number to be on the owners record? we currently just do them with vaccines?

Just had an inspection,
Was mainly focusing on 28day rule date labeling, storage (fridge temp monitoring), stock mangment and CD's. so i would focus on thoses areas

I am trying to get our practice to be a TP and need to compile SOPs on almost everything. To see how another practice does them would be a great help ! Would you consider to email me some copies so i can understand the amount of info needed ?

I haven't had to prepare for a VMD inspection because we decided to do PSS instead. I'm not sure VMD will have any say in how you clean out your kennels or run reception but they will definately go through how you store, record and prescribe your meds with a fine tooth comb.

I would go through every drug you have, get the data sheet and risk assess it - like you have already probably for COSHH. If you have an element of risk noted, say for example chemo drugs, steroids, profender, isoflo, that stuff for ring worm that begins with "G" etc do a SOP. Look really carefully at everything. Drugs companies should give you data info or look on VMD website or NOAH. Devise some way of making sure all staff aware of risk - one place i worked in used coloured stickers on bottle if needed gloves etc. If you use anything off cascade/unlicensed then make sure you have some sort of disclaimer system and a SOP for how to use it. We use a lot of unlicensed stuff for our rabbits.

Do SOPs for handling drugs, dispensing, checking meds, ordering and returns, repeat prescriptions, recording batch numbers, controlled drugs, etc. They can take some time to do, as Stuart has said!

Check out the VMD website... they should give you a list of SOP they expect...

Failing that... go to the RCVS website and download their Practice Standards Manual...

If I'm honest... you'll never have a practice list of SOPs done in a week...

Our head nurse has been on them for about 3 months... and she's been deligating some of them too!

Go for sections... Cleaning, Prep room, Kennels, Theatre, Reception etc etc etc... might make it easier!
