I was just looking for some advice as having a bit of a panic! I'm in the middle of writing my surgical cases assignment and have been referring to a cat who had a tail amputation as my orthopaedic case. We haven't had many pinnings, plates or

Re: Orthopaedic??

I'm sure this may be ok. You may have to use a transfere of skill and knowlege base to cover certain points. Last time I checked amputaitions is orthopaedic, it may not be fancy as no implants but your the points covered by it being a surgical case should be relevant. If it's anaesthesia then consideration for pain, time under ga etc need to be considered. Hospitalisation and monitoring for case would be similar to orthopaedic op and discharging to client will have some considerations, kept confind, pain, wound management. It all seems to be there. So don't panic I'm sure your CC will spk to your college and find it's ok.

Re: Orthopaedic??

Thanx guys! Im glad I asked. My CC thought this would be an ok case to use but I wasn't too sure. I have another case which I can use although it was a long time ago. Will just need to refresh my memory of its care when I get back to work monday and dig out hosp sheets! I will be sooooo glad when these assignments are over! x

Re: Orthopaedic??

Sorry but I agree with the above comments! If you can possibly use a different case then I would suggest doing so. Using this one for its fractured pelvis isn't ideal either unless it had a surgical procedure that directly related to the pelvis fracture.

Good luck x

Re: Orthopaedic??

I agree with stu I would like to see something that requires some sort of implant.

I also agree regarding post op care of this patient. I would try and get a different case amputation is seen a salvage operation as it were.

Good luck

Re: Orthopaedic??

I don't think I would accept it as orthopeadic from a surgical point of view... they usually ask for pins plates etc like you side.

As for the fractured pelvis care - I would probably think that that was ok??

What does your CC/Assessor think?
