If it is any consolation I pretty much had to do my whole L3 portfolio myself, and do all the groundwork and checking off against all the standards - my assessor meant well, but it ended up with most of my work being signed off by other qualified members of staff, and my assessor just countersigning. Even all my K&U questions (pages and pages of them) were signed of by a colleague and just countersigned - because my VNAC knew there was a problem with my assessor, and this was the only way they could overcome it without causing major upset.

I have no idea how NPL works, but my advice would be to keep your own record, including lots of prompting, so that the qualified members of staff watching you will remember - perhaps get them to sign your own personal records just so it will jog their memory if needs be?

Make sure you can trace each case - just keeping note of the date, breed, age etc should be enough for you to look back through the ops list/consult list.

Sorry, I'm probably being no help, and the chances are I'm talking twaddle - Good luck though!

I had a word with a senior member of staff on how to approach my coach today. I'm still very pessimistic about things changing, I just don't think having a practice manager as your clinical coach works! I think I will be flagging it with college when we start back. I refuse to balls things up!

Re: NPL 'When did it happen' question...

Moan away! I know exactly what you're going through, I had no help or support on my first year pf then even less in my NPL. Speak to your centre. Mine was my rock as no one cared in practice.

The most important thing is to keep a paper trail though. it shouldn't matter too much that there is no no. as long as its identifiable to your practice, just make sure you put it on now. Have you been keeping a study diary? We were told by college that we had to keep a diary of everything we did in practice everyday along with any work/revision/reading that we did as it was proof.

I know it probably seems like you'll never get there but you will! I've just got my practicals in a few weeks, don't even know where they'll be yet! ek!

Re: NPL 'When did it happen' question...

I don't like to sound like I'm having a moan, but basically I am! I'm getting a little disheartened over it all. My original coach left months and months ago, therefore my practice manager took over and hasn't attended any coach meetings. I feel like I'm meddling my way through it all a little bit, and it's frustrating because I like to have everything in order! For instance, I haven't been putting patient numbers against my work, therefore I will have to try and back track 12 months. Ah, what to do!

Re: NPL 'When did it happen' question...

It is credable to use approved prior learning, I used it alot in my NPL. The important thing is that your clinical coach is happy that you are competant as they have to sign their name on it. You could also gather some statements from collegues that witnessed it. Keep them in a sensitive evidence file the same as for the old portfolio. That way if anything gets flagged up you have something to show! Also keep copies of any hosp sheets, anaesthetic records, home care plans that you make.

Hope this helped! I've not long finished mine so its all fresh! lol
