My dog is in the early stages of arthritis and I have him on nutraquin plus but would definately be willing to try something else especially as it looks a lot cheaper! I dont mind paying more but if you can get an equally good product for less it would be silly not too!

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

I started my very arthritic dog on green lipped mussel capsule from the health food shop and he hasn't limped in ages.
[/quote]

yup we used to as well - main reason was the effavet was too bloody expensive for most people to buy, and yes we did see good results with the human product. I realise there is probably more expense involved in producing these supplements for animals but if producers want to sell the stuff they should maybe start looking at a lower profit margin so that it is affordable (this also applies to rx food manufacturers)

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

Human grade products are not refind as well as animal products. Personally if I get arthritis I'm going to dose myself on animal stuff!

I get loads of people asking me about giving cod liver oil tablets, what a waste of time they are. The only reason why those types of things work is beacause people that eat fish have a lot of it. Not 2 spoon fulls. Giving suppliments on top of poor diets to animals is the same thing. When it comes to suppliments you have to ask yourself why bother if the animal is on Butchers tripe or equivilant.

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

My old boss used to recommend human EPO 500mg capsules for dogs with flakey skin.
Have a look at this study done by Vetplus. You can send products into them and they will test them for their contents.

Not all glucosamine is the same. Glucosamine HCL is natural and Glucosamine Sulphate is a man made synthetic molecule with over 20% being salt. Not ideal for older animals, especially ones with renal problems. There is 75% less glucosamine in one gram of glucosamine sulphate than there is in glucosamine HCL.

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

i give my dog human chondritin/glucosamin tabs daily, hes not been lame for ages, (for arthritis in his toes)

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

Bare in mind that most tests show "Human Grade" have very little of the content they show as being in actually in. They say 20% you lucky if there is 1% that kind of thing. There is a special standard you can get that shows it has passed the tests but due to cost most dont have them. Cost being random tests have to show correct amount of wahtever and that would cost money to buy the whatever and not just say it is in there.

Re: Human grade nutritional supplements

green lipped mussel,- have heard of brewers yeast also, EPO. psylium I have used with one of my own cats but have to say fybogel is a damn sight easier and for my cat at least is more effective (and cheaper) than peridale capsules or lactulose ( the latter usually ends up being spat out and is an absolute swine to clean off carpets) - I have a list of these somewhere of what people are using and what are actually safe.
