Just wondering what people use in practice to wash their ET tubes? I was always taught not to use hibi but have started working in a practive that does. Curious to see what the general concensus is abouth what cleaning product/protocol to

Re: ET tubes

We use Trigene at 1:200 water, then rinsed very well. You can clean them and then they are disinfected. ET tubes are not going into a sterile area but the area is also sensitive. I have seen issues in the past with use of medis inclusing deterioation of rubber (usually due to being left to long) also damage to the trachea prob if not rinsed very well. This way disinfection and cleaning is covered. It is non corrosive and safe as long as rinsed correctly.

Re: ET tubes

http://www.vetnurse.co.uk/forums/p/12197/106866.aspx#106866

Wash with hibi, hot water and et brushes, rinse well, and rinse well again then soak in Milton for half an hour

Re: ET tubes

We use hibi to clean them out (using a bottlebrush for the middle pieces) then we rinse them out really well. Blow all the cuff up and soak in meddis or meddizyme (for about 10 minutes or longer if we get called top help vets!) and then we rinse them all again, make sure all cuffs are still blown up Any deflated ones show that they are broken and are discarded. This is done with every ET tube,. We also remove the blue/metal pieces which link the tube to the circuit (They are kept on the tube after cleaning though). This means we can clean the join part as well.

We don't autocave ours as they get too brittle but the second cleaner is a cold steriliser so they do get sterilised that way.

Re: ET tubes

we use medizyme to soak for 10 mins, then scrub with water and use a pipe cleaner for inside. We then cold sterilise once a week and double check all cuffs work properly :) Used to use Hibi and never experienced any problems though.

Re: ET tubes

Threre is another thread somewhere if you search

Hibi is an irritant so is not ideal. I would use medizyme which will help break down all the crap and snot etc left in the tube, scrub, rinse well, and then please please use a cold steriliser! Meddis is a cold steriliser but NOT a cleaner - you need to physically clean the ET tubes first. Milton is Ok for sterilisation too I believe.

Ensure LOTS of rinsing whatever you use!

Sorry for ranting - it's one of my pet hates

Re: ET tubes

think there may be a thread on this somewhere. we clean using hibi and water and soak in rapidex. Use novasapa for cold sterilisation (autoclav perioically too although need to be careful as weakens the rubber ones so need to check for leaks). Think there was lots of suggestions but as long as they are thoroughly washed and dried, all residues removed by rinsing with water should be miniml probs

Re: ET tubes

We have used hibbi in the past, medis is another product i have seen used but also milton :)
