I'm seeking some info/advice from any fellow VN's who have worked in Australia please!
I'm very keen to find a way to work as a VN in Australia. My parents are moving out there (with job offers) and my partner would love to head out there

Re: Working in Australia

Thank you guys :-)

I did email Kookaburra who said that i would need to contact the Australia Embassy London regarding a second worhing holiday visa. Unfortunately i would not be granted one. The answer i expected to be honest!

For now, i feel like i cannot give up a job i love here on a chance to go over there and get sponsored, or not. I will endeavour to do as much large animal work as possible and get as much experience with snakes and spiders as i can and i will search Kookaburra for positions :-)

Alana, was the job vacancy for the Oz job clear that they would sponsor foreign nurses? Would you recommend that i just apply to them all?

Appreciate all the replies :-)

Re: Working in Australia

You would need sponsorship to go, as at 27 you are no longer considered a dependant of your parents. VN jobs easy to find, and when you work in the right clinic you have the freedom to work your nursing skills to the level you have trained to!

Sponsorship is hard to come by - Aussies love UK trained VNs - but the sponsorship involves them proving they spend a certain % of the annual earnings on training. And a minimum wage to be paid (In region of $49-50,000) so much more than here!

I searched kookaburra, and got offered a place with sponsorship. Unfortunatly the government took too long (I was at week 16 when usal processing is 8-12 weeks) and with the opening of the new hospital they had built, they needed the staff asap. SO lost my sponsorship.

It is however possible - but difficult!

Good luck!!

I use to work in an inner city practice and did alot behind the scene. We did cat castrates, induced anaesthesia and intubate, catheterise, IVFT and scale and polishes, draw blood, lab work and nurse clinics which are all under veterinary supervision + laws and regulations here in Aus.. My vets had alot of trust in us nurses and they appreciated our work. Its just a matter of finding a decent clinic and supervisors that allow qualified nurses to do what we spent years studying/training for. You will find that inner city clinics will pay alot better than rural and depended upon experience. I dont think you will have any trouble finding a job, the Australians love Uk qualified nurses, however you just need to search for a clinic that is willing to sponsor you. Your best bet is to advertise on Kookaburra vets website or email the clinics in the area your interested in. Good Luck :)

Re: Working in Australia

A nurse i work with was investigating that for a while, but decided against it because she found out that nurses in Australia generally do a lot more reception work than they do over here. Then once you are there it should be fairlly easy to find a job either locumming or permanent, there was heaps of work available when i was there a few years ago.

Re: Working in Australia

hi, a few of my friends had used kookaburra vets http://www.kookaburravets.com/australia/IndexOz.htm
