We have a 1/6 rota and bank holidays are "kind of spread out fairly"!!
We get paid dependant on time - 7am-10pm £37.23 / 10pm-7am £52.12 (for the 1st 30mins) - this covers milage to the practice.
We then get paid per min there after - 7am-10pm 68p/min / 10pm-7am 81pmin.

We do not have to do checks. But sometimes get called in sunday mornings to help for which we receive a 1/2 day off in lieu (also get this regardless of being called in or not).

eugh it sucks doesnt it? My last practice did much the same thing as you except it was noone on call at all and then they would ring around. Worked ok for us though as the vets were hugely independent and we only ever got called in for like a c section or ex lap. We just got the time back which we could take as holiday. I just find it so frustrating here because its a pretty new practice with a relatively young boss who I thought would be a bit less out of the ark when it came to pay and treating staff well. I once worked at a practice where you did no on call, no oohs and the salary was amazing. I nearly choked on my tea when they told me what I would get paid. But the boss said they felt the nurses were a hugely important part of the practice and deserved to have a life and live well. They were amazing bosses but sadly they retired early after making their millions and the new bosses froze our pay booo!! Have you got a practice manager you can talk to about sorting a mid week rota?

you are not the only one that gets a rough deal! We are trying to sort out OOHs out too.

We work 1in 4 weekends on a rota and 1 in 5 saturday mornings and only get out time back. We do not even get double time ect for sundays or bank holidays. We get no petrol money. This isnt so bad for me beacause I am only 2 minutes down the road, but it isnt ideal for the other nurses or for me if i am back and forward with inpatients. We have no weekday rota, the vets call a nurse at random and get whoever answers the phone. This is usually me beacause I have no children and live 2 minutes down the road so I seem to get picked on. I have done 4 bitch caesers in the last 6 months with no additional recompense!

I am desperatley trying to fight for a weekday rota and some additional perks for OOH oncall. It is getting to the stage where I will refuse to answer the phone during the week as we have no set rota.

This is certainly the worst on call rota system I have worked. Previously on call has been incorporated into salary or I would have extra money for extra oncall nights. Currently I get nothing as I am paid an hourly rate!

wow!! ok im jealous of all these places :) i dont want a lot but i guess i just want to stand up for us and our profession....im not sure why people feel its ok to give us poor working terms. These hours wouldnt be accepted in any other profession.

I used to do weekend OOH where I used to work. We used to have 6hrs in the morning and 2hrs in the evening both sat and sun. For this we were given 4 days off during the week usually 2 days before weekend on call on day the week after and one the week after that. So if effect double time. Anything above this was paid at double time. We could go home and if we were called out we got petrol and our overtime started from when we left home to when we got back.

wow thats an amazing deal!! Found out today we will get milage if we are called back oohs but not for tending to inpatients. Its not perfect but its a good start. Thanks guys for your replies :)

i do on call were i work we get £20 a night monday to friday, saturday and sunday its £30 a night.

if we get called in to help we get 25% of the final bill.

so its a good deal.

Thankyou so much!! And its so nice to hear you were in the same position. Im really struggling tbh. I feel like I have no life because im on call all the time and then when I do get the time off Im too skint to do anything!! Mind you none of us do this job for the money ha! Can I ask did you have to raise awkward things like money for oohs or anything? Im not sure how to go about it without making either of us feel poo. I really hope things do get better ive only been there since may but i keep looking at the job ads on here!! Ill def try and show him your on call terms though. Even if we only get milage its a start. Thanks lovely

Our full timers have the night duty retainer incorportated into their annual salary, part timers get 4 hours pay for night duty retainer, and 8 hours pay for weekend (fri-mon) retainer.

We all get OOH's payments per call out, this is a set fee (£15-25) dependant on what time you are called out, but you could be there for 5 mins or 5 hours.

For inpatients we charge £13 per inpatient for night checks, inpatients at weekends we only charge if we have to go in more than once (vet normally does am check, nurses normally do evening check)

We also get mileage 40p per mile.

Reading this back, makes me realise what a good deal we get, but never seems that way at 4am when you've been in theatre for 2hrs and have to be ready for the next days work at 8am! Hope the above helps By the way I was in exactly the same position as you in a brand new start up practice 7 years ago, it was really tough in the early days but it doesget better honestly!
