Watch out ureamic (sp?) lesions in the mouth or the really nasty sweet smell, which usually mean the lesions are in the guts, which makes them feel really shitty. Once the lesions are in the mouth then its times to call it a day, they feel awful & look awful, so it niver to euthanise.

Re: Renalzin?

Thanks for all your advice, cat has gone down hill and has now started vomitting alot, and client is reluctant to continue trying the renal food.

Re: Renalzin?

Feeling a bit of a specialist on feline renal supplements & food, firstly cos of Blossom & now cos of Sonny!!

I feed Blossom RCW Renal Special - slightly tastier diet but not best for long term - when she first became ill then moved over to the normal Renal diet. She wouldn't touch any of the wet varieties of any food including KD or RCW renal.

I tried her with different phosphate binders in her diet including

Ipakatine (OK if syringed but wouldn't touch over food),

Renalzin (wouldn't touch either way - became a spitting horror if we went near her with it - Bayer rep still doesn't believe me as "its not got a taste or smell" tell that to the cat!!)

Maalox - best for binding phosphate but would only take if syringed or off spoon & then she drooled for about 5 minutes after.

Now Sonny is in renal failure & have tried him with RCW & Hills food - he won't touch any of them - and Sonny is not a fussy cat (he was 9kg at one point) We've just tried him on the Purina renal diet (can't remember its initials) and he's loving it.

I agree with Caro though, changing food slowly is certainly best and do not feed Brand A when they are ill, if you want to continue with Brand A - they develop food adversions and stick to those adversions!!

Thats the good point with RCW Renal special - its very tasty and then there's another one if you need to change.

Re: Renalzin?

You are better sticking to one food take the change over a lot slower. Mix a little into a lot of old food over a longer period allowing him to adjust. Swoping around will not encourage him to swop.

Cats stick to one food because in the wild it is safest to eat what you know. The more you swop the more he knows he is safest sticking to what he knows.

The mouse may vary with individual mice but it is still basically the same. To him you are trying to slide something toxic in and pull his mouse away, so you need to flavour the mouse gradually.

RCW (royal canin) Renal chicken, beef or dry

Hills KD tins, pouches and dry

Purina nd tins and dry

Leo specific trays

renalzin is NOT a replacement for diet it is a supplement so ideally you would have the diet and the renalzin, only really started using it at work recently found so far am with holding my opinion!

If the cat doesnt want to eat the wet then try the dry and try with a water fountain to encourage water intake.

Re: Renalzin?

Well i'd be interested in hearing the results when people get some.

Re: Renalzin?

We have only just started using renalzin, we have 3 cats that have recently started on it so we're waiting to see if there are any decent results or not.

Re: Renalzin?

I've not even heard of that

Re: Renalzin?

[quote user="katy coleman"]
