your college should have a breakdown of the practical exams and what instruments you will be asked to select for each exam. There is usually one exam that has more general instruments and a couple that will have mainly ortho instruments so a good knowledge of both is necessary. If your college are unhelpful i would try and get the practical tasks from the RCVS website as these help give guidance on what to focus on. there is a little surgical instrument book thats really good for practical revision - its called veterinary surgical instruments :an illustrated guide, you can pick it up from amazon and other booksellers, it has most of what you need but for more details on implants such as pins, screws and plates, the order manuals that most practices have are good for descriptions and pictures. photocopy them, cut them out and test yourself without the names and you will soon pick them up, also asking the vets and other nurses to only ask for them by their correct names when assisting in theatre and resterilising the surgical instruments and labeling them regualry helps imprint them in your brain, i know it seems a slog but there is no easy way of remembering in afraid! hope this helps

Re: What instruments do you need to learn for practical exams?

Retractors are always a favourite of examiners. both self retaining and hand held retractors.

Basically prepare for anything. a good understanding of all the common instruments used. Vet Instrumentation catalogue is good.

also there is a good book
