I smiled sweetly and said please feel free to contact your lawyer and let him know, here is my details/company name and reason we took it. Within 10 days l had a letter of apology from a very expensive local law firm on behalf of their client and a cheque for the amount, he said that he had now explained the law to his client and promised there would be no more problems.

The key is not what it is to the place you work at even if it was a toilet cubical. You need to realise the people listening to it ie you are "the public" hence the place is deemed public and needs a licence. And depending how that space is used you pay different fees.

The licence fee goes towards the people who produced the music who wrote it who played it a whole list that will be named when the music was lodged with the copyright society. Every record that a radio station plays pays a fee to the copyright soc. which passes it out to those the list as well as taking their chunk in admin fees, hence having adverts to help pay for the music and people who produce those adverts will also have paid out copyright licence fees based on use even the BBC pay, a large part of your licence fee goes on copyright fees.

Re: Radios in practice

[quote user="Steph Worsley"]Steph, it can be seen as breach of copyright, just like playing a film dvd to a waiting room full of people is, you have to be licensed for these things.
