I work in Irelands first and only Cat Hospital and it is best to view that everything is contagious when it comes to cats.

http://www.fabcats.org/owners/disease.php is a good start for the diseases in cats.

Anything that a cat has touched should be cleaned before another cat touch's it. Hands should be washed between patients to prevent contamination between patients.

Owners usually phone in with "My cat seems off form and is not eating" from here we have to find out what the problem is. Further tests are usually required to pinpoint what is exactly wrong as they are not as forecoming as dogs in letting us know what is wrong.

From handling them right to treating them so that they are happy and content it is certainly a worth while challange as no 2 cats are the same.

Re: infectious diseases

thanks aimee that would be a great help, i also need to no it all for my exams : / wish there were more ways/technology with identifing these viruses

i remember this during my college years. basically they are all the same! except some minor details. we had some really good isolation sheets at my old practice, ill see if i can get hold of some for you.

My thoughts are, if in doubt treat as contagious and make sure everyone is very good with cleaning of hands/tables/instruments between patients
