Just want your advice on how to approach this situation. We are recruiting a new nurse for our practice, she is similar age to me, and has similar level of experience in nursing, but I know that she is being offered a higher wage than I

Re: Salary
Sal, you seem to be very angry and unforgiving about my posts. I am sorry you feel "pity" for the newcomer, I don't, we are a lovely bunch of people to work with, just unfortunately the practice has no structure and no team meetings / reviews so a lot of small things go unresolved which can sometimes frustrate the members of staff - I probably do not put my practice in the best light because I post on here when I get frustrated about things at work, so I apologise for this, but please do not slate my workplace when you do not actually work there or know what goes on.

I only asked for advice if others have been i similar situations about asking for pay rises or how to approach this matter with their managers, I am not very experienced in this kind of thing as I have only ever worked in this practice and nothing is ever very formal in my workplace, we have no meetings or reviws etc (which has its good points and bad points).

On the whole the members of staff are lovely and the nurses each support one another and help each other out daily - but yes there are things that could be improved.

No I am not unhappy with my workplace, just get very frustrated at times which I may wrongly tend to vent on here, but I thought this was the point of these forums to get other's views on things and advice etc, not to judge each other or their work!

And yes, I do agree with others about basing my asking for a rise on what I bring to the practice so thanks for the advice
I am sorry but I am neither angry or unforgiving of your posts. So if we can clear that one up straight off.

When I reply to a post where I know I have replied to a poster before I generally check back to see what the tone of the previous posts have been - and I am sorry but if you are happy where you are working and with the people you are working with then this isnt the way you are coming across (to me at least - I cant speak for others)

I am giving honest advice on what I am seeing nothing else. I have no vendetta or anything else against you. I have never met you that I am aware of, I cannot comment on your workplace other than what you have told me in your posts and it is this that I base my replies on and it is for this reason that I pity a newcomer to it - not because I have decided you must be a nasty or a horrible person but because the impression I have been given is that it isnt a very happy place to work. Had I seen some positive posts then my opinion may have been very different?

Re: Salary

As previously said, if you ask for a pay rise the worst that can happen is that they say "no". Providing that you have approached the subject in a clever way and can justify your reasons for asking (i.e. you work your butt off) then there should be no awkwardness even if the answer is no. Some practices are feeling the pinch at the moment so it may be the case that they say no for now but because you have approached them it is something that they are then likely to reconsider down the line.

I just want to wish you the best of luck! x

Re: Salary

Sal, you seem to be very angry and unforgiving about my posts.
Its a tricky thing to bring up and i would not neccessarily even mention that you have seen that this other nurse is getting paid more than you, but maybe just ask about the possibility of a pay rise and list the qualities you bring and if you have taken on any new resposibilities since your last pay review etc.

Good luck
I agree, and it's all well and good if they agree to a pay rise, but what if she is turned down? What is the next step hypothetically?

Its not good for the team if equally qualified, experienced nurses who are an asset to the practice know that they are getting less than a newcomer

Just playing devils adovocate, but would be interested in how to deal with such a situation... 'cause I would have no idea!
If the practice refuse a pay rise then u have 2 choices, put up with it or leave.

As has been said before it is standard in practice for nurses with equal rensonsibility and experience to be paid differently. Im not saying this is right but its very common.

Re: Salary

I agree that this is a very tricky situation. When I took my last nursing position I turned down the initial offer of employment because I felt that it was not satisfactory for the work that was involved (I was being given alot of additional practice admin jobs). I suggested a salary that suited myself and they agreed readily (I should have asked for more!)

I think that you are perfectly within your right to request a pay rise but you do need to be cautious about how you do this. For starters, you would be unwise to reveal that you know what salary this new nurse is being paid. Salaries are confidential and this would not look good for you even if it was an accidental finding! Have you got an appraisal coming up? This would be the perfect opportunity to mention how brilliant you are and what an asset to the practice you are! You need to sell yourself. They're unlikely to just offer you a pay rise for the sake of it. You need to make it clear how hard you work and why you deserve a pay rise. I would request a private meeting with the Practice Manager to discuss. Make sure that you have plenty of examples to demonstrate your committment to the practice.

Remember that it is likely that this new nurse is unaware of what salary you are on and therefore doesn't realise that she is earning more. Try not to let this influence your relationship with her. As I'm sure you know it is very difficult joining a practice and slotting into an already well established team.

Good luck x

Re: Salary

Its really really common for this to happen, especially if practices are struggling to find qualified staff. Practices are having to offer more generous salaries to attract the staff they want, they dont have the need to do this obviously with the staff they already employ.

At the end of the day salaries should be private and although the OP has found out about this 'accidentally'- it should not be used as the basis for levering an increased salary out of the boss. Although the new nurse may be a similar age and have similar experience (how is this known?) it does not mean she has to be paid the same wage, if she has negotiated better and the boss has agreed to pay more based on what she has to offer to the practice then that should remain between her and employer. If the OP wanted to negotiate for better then it should be done on the basis of what she has to offer to the practice not that somebody is being paid better.

This is a bad situation in what sounds to be an already unhappy practice (judging by posters previous comments in other threads). I can see this is causing bitterness already and I pity the newcomer coming into this kind of working environment.

I am not being nasty but this job in this practice is obviously causing the OP quite a lot of unhappiness for various reasons and it might just be the time to find somewhere else to work. Everybody has a choice either put up with it or move on.
