I'm guessing your setting up a practice looking at the other threads you been putting up. You'll need to appoint an RPS too, which is usually someone within the practice who undergone training usually a two day course

Re: checking meds

http://www.christie.nhs.uk/pro/nwmp/radiation_protection.aspx these are the guys we use.

I work at an online vet pharmacy where we get in written prescriptions from clients the vet makes them up and sends them out.hes going on holiday and i will be making up the prescriptions,we have a locum vet coming in to check them over, which i think its a good idea to get everything checked anyway but thought id just double check legal requirements to keep everyone right,

You could actually maybe help us with something else.I see your into your radiography-we have to set up an RPA where would we find a list of people who could be this person?

Re: checking meds

I used to work in a practice that had a good system. We had a dispensary nurse who used to work in pharmacy/consults and they would be responsible for dispensing meds from consults, assisting vets in consults and doing repeat prescriptions.

Our system was reception take order and explain to client 24-48hrs to do

vet would check request say yes or no and advice how many meds to dispense, whether we need to see before next script or whether they need seeing.

nurse would then dispense drugs in the name of the vet who ok'd script, writing on notes such as when to see again etc... or call owners to say we need to see fluffy before meds!

these would then be checked by a vet prior to dispensing meds to client.

Re: checking meds

As i understand it, yes. A vet or suitably qualified person (eg someone who has done the course) MUST be the one who signs the label to say its correct. Saying that, most places dont.

Re: checking meds

I'm not sure about the law itself, but i have worked in different practices and each have their own policy on dispensing medication. In one practice we could take the order for a prescription and put it up, it was then left for the vet to check the history adn drugs, sign the label then put in the draw for the owner to pick up. In another a qualified nurse could check the prescription and the animal had to be seen in the last 6 months. In either case it was down to the veterinary surgeon because the animal is under their care.

I think with prescriptions it is always a good idea to get them double checked so mistakes can be caught before they go to the owner.
