Subject to validation, Harper Adams will be providing a top-up degree and Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing on a part time basis and by distance delivery. I have set up a new discussion page for anybody who is interested. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey, have any fellow scots got any advice of financial benefits/ funding available of studying in Scotalnd vs England? Im RVN but never done degree so hopefully this might mean there is more funding available??

Hi there,

I'm really interested in the top-up degree too and would need to do distance learning because of full time shift work as an RVN. Just a question - what do you mean its not a case of topping up? Do you have to do the whole degree even if you are an RVN? So far I've been looking into the top-up degee offered by CAW/Middlesex...am waiting for details, but as I understand it they offer a top-up option, rather than having to do the whole degree.

Any info gratefully received....have found this thread really helpful so far xx

Huddersfield does not often have dates and times that work out but they are FREE!

I did look into sitting exams at Leeds Uni but they wanted £80 a pop so decided it was cheaper to travel to Leamington to do it. 3 hours on the train before hand is really good for revision as well!!

I have sat one of my exams for my course at Huddersfield university rather than travelling down to Warwickshire. If you can find a local college or uni that will let you sit the exam at their facilities, you can sit them there, BUT it is difficult to find other sites that allow you to do this.

Hi Sarah

I am really enjoying the degree. I qualified in 2004 and am just starting to get to the point where I am forgetting a lot of the theory on the nursing side so it has helped as a refresher but also goes into a lot more detail. I have learnt so much and it is all really useful soI have actually put some of into practice. I find distance learning realy suits me. You only have to complete one module per year to stay enrolled so if family or work commitments mean you cant spend as much time studying it is not a problem. You have to sit exams in Warwickshire but if you book the trains early enough only costs a tenner each way so not that bad.

And yes it does count as CPD as you are doing a course as well as background reading for the subjects!!

No, I am not in practice at the moment. There are some modules where you will might need to do case studies but I have a local practice where I used to work and they have been really good and said I can go in and do bits and bobs as I need to but so far none of the coursework has required me to do this.

hi clare i am considering doing the long distance degree after finishing the NVQ training, just wanted to know whether you think its worth doing? is it interesting, would you recommend doing the long distance degree rather than a full time nursing degree as i am just in the beginning of the VN journey so just deciding whether to do the fulltime degree or NVQ and long distance degree ( which i would prefer as i wouldn't have to move away and could still be earning)

Am I right in thinking you have to be in practice to do the degree top up, as you have to write case studies. I always fancied doing it, but now I'm teaching I don't think I can.

Thanks Helen. I have applied for that grant before, this is my first degree and I work full time which Mr Brown calculates as me deserving a grand total of 50 quid per year!!!! I got it the first year but the form to complete is about 20 pages and they want to know absolutly everything about me and my husband. I couldn't be bothered after that, didn't seem worth it.

Little hint if you do decide to do the degree Jo - if you need textbooks use ABE books - get them second hand dead cheap. The last lot I bought I got three books for less than a tenner including P+P!

If you have not done a degree course before and are completing the degree either full time or part time ( at least at a rate where you will finish the degree in double the normal time ? 4 modules per year ? ) then you can apply for a grant (tuition and course). Check up on the website www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk or call 0845 300 50 90.

Glad to hear you got all the info. I assume they mentioned you can APL some of it as well. I haven't done this yet but apparently for some modules instead of doing the modules via their workbooks you can provide evidence of prior learning, such as CPD courses. Saves a bit on the money.

Just out of curiosity what funding will you get. My employer used to pay for mine but have since left so need to sort out applying for a grant.

just got off the phone to them - reallly lovely people

its not a case of topping up - but i can do the whole degree distance learning, 24modules, £265 per module, at my own speed etc etc

funding avaliable to me...

seems quite good...just waiting for my pack to come though the post

I am doing a degree in Animal Welfare via distance learning with Warcsol. They are helpful, at the end of the phone or via email for any questions and understanding about fitting study in with other commitments and with any sudden changes in circumatances.

Louise was right!! I am Clare and I am doing the top up (and I work for Guide Dogs, good memory!!).

I am doing it via distance learning with Warscol. I am about 18 months into it so a way to go yet but I would really recommend it. It is time consuming so have to be really comitted but I am enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. The college are good too, get lots of support but dont have anyone chasing you so can go through it at your own pace. Is there anything in particular you wanted to know? If so just ask and I will try to help!
