Can anyone tell me if Veterinary Practices have a legal obligation to treat wildlife? If so where can I find this information from?
If the answer is yes (which I assume it is!) are they within their right to charge the person who brings in

Re: Treating wildlife

I know you've had lots of requests so understand if you don't have time, but I would greatly appreciate if you had any info for clients and staff about treatment for sick injured wildlife' as we always seem to be at a loss what to really do and don't really have any wildlife organisations near us to help.
It is so difficult and is a practice by practice basis.

As for squirrels - they can be released under license so it is always worth seeing if you can get anyone who is willing to cope with all the paperwork to do that - gives you more options then as really, the amount of squirrels we would be treating and releasing would make no difference in a large proportion of the country - as Natural England readily admitted to me on the phone!

Re: Treating wildlife

Can I please have one too?
I am forever in arguements with our practice about treating whildlife.. if it has spikes then it is cute and worth treating, if it has feathers then it is a different story!

Squirrels and such like get PTS straight away as countryside act prevents release as it has been taken into captivity.

It would also be great to recieve the leaflets if possible?Could I PM you?

I have recently put together a widlife folder at my work including widllfie feeding regime, first aid treatment and identification aids. I have done alot of work in widllife rehabilitation but still find it very tricky to interpret the law. As far as I can tell it is an offence to kill a wild animal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, yet once an establishment takes a wild animal in for treatment it is covered by a different section of law as the animal is now under that establishments ownership. It then states I think in the Protection of Animals Act that it is not an offence to kill an animal if it is done humanley. I find it such a grey area. It would be interesting to see a case study on it but I suppose its not an area of law which has really been tried and tested. I would assume that it would be an obligation for a vets to treat wildlife for free and euthanasia would only be acceptable if the injury or disease (as stated in the wildlife and countryside act) was not treatable. I know in the wildlife and countryside act it is an offence to release an animal in such a way to cause it suffering and therefore the animal would have to be treated and released in an area that is suitable and not doing so would be an offence. Its very difficult I've heard the RSPCA are a struggle to gets funds from especially in case of birds and are very reluctant to go out and rescue wildlife

If anyone knows more about the law side of things it would be great to hear, I feel it should be something vets and nurses should be learning in far more detail.

Re: Treating wildlife

I know this is about a year too late(!) but do you still have some info you could email out to me please...?
