How often do you re-vaccinate? I read it that every time an animal comes in to the uk, it needs a rabies vacc 21 days before?
I wonder if we'll join them on 1 vacc every year, or if resident pets of the uk will continue on every 3 yrs....

I hate this, I know the old rules and can rattle them off. Damn them for changing things!

As for the new relaxed rules reducing smuggling, I'm not convinced it will.

As far as l understand the companys are happy enough it will work from conversation and defra must be satisfied. In other countries where rabies vac are standard as they have it (rabies or cover with vac in case) they don't do blood tests on anything they work there.

The ones I have seen fail the BS was taken at 14 ish days. We thought we had sampled too early?

The one that failed twice was revaccinated and resampled at 21 ish days - failed again...

Will these dogs really have resistance to rabies if they are unlucky enough to encounter it?

I must admit the pet passport scheme and vaccs in general are not my strongest point, so I'm a bit confused

It doesnt mean the vac didn't take if it is over 30 days your chances decrease of getting a correct bloods. When it is needed then it will kick in. If you bt the +ve dogs at a couple of months+ you will probably get a -ve result from them as well.... until it is needed within the vac span.

Same as 6mths quarantine it was a disingenuous figure an animal can get rabies at up to a year post exposure. in fact last dog to get rabies in quarantine the owners went out the country again and left it at the kennels and it came down with it at 9mths.

Why is a rabies blood test no longer required? I have seen a few fail - two in the last year, including one dog who failed at least twice!

From a veterinary pov, the tick bourne diseases are just as much of a worry as rabies.

From a owner of a unusual breed in the uk, the regulations opens up the gene pool and also makes it possible to import dogs that we couldn't due to current rules.

wow I didn't realise they were stopping the compulsory tick treatment and considering the worming! The stats. on this link re. projected rabies cases are interesting and I hope correct.

We got sent an e-mail at work from animal health explaining the changes but it is all on DEFRA's website in the travelling with pets bit.

As I understand it, they still have to go through the same vet check/parasite treatment and airport processes so it should really only be rabies which is potentially a hazard. Yes, there are ways of smuggling and illegally bypassing those, I'm sure, but those could be illegally bypassed now under the current system so I wouldn't have thought there would be any more risk under the new system than the old for most things apart from rabies? I stand corrected if I'm being thick

I have just caught an item on BBC Breakfast this morning where a radio presenter/dog owner was passing on incorrect facts and info to the public! Be ready for phone calls on Monday.

I have sent an email to the programme asking them why when doing this kind of thing why they didn't have someone from DEFRA who can at least pass on correct information

I don't know that the relaxing of the laws is going to be a good thing. We'd better brush up on our foreign beasties and rabies!

On the plus side for the overseas rescue charities, it does mean that it should help to reduce their costs (fostering/boarding) and also mean they get a lot less dogs and cats dumped on them by owners who a) can't afford the whole procedure and b) have had to move back to the UK at relatively short notice and not planned ahead in time to sort passports etc out 6mths in advance.

Given the amount of smuggled animals before the passport and l am betting false paperwork after it was changed l am hoping this will make it not worthwhile to dodge and actually be safer.

I must admit I think I'm not convinced that the changes are good ones, I think we still need to be careful with the rabies side of things...yes they are supposedly on top of the wildlife vaccinations but there will always be the ones who dont get vaccinated and then we are back to the state where we are on course to have rabies back in the UK
