It seems that the guy was in a fragile mental state from what I've heard, which is probably the reason that he did what he did. The big failure was leaving him to be in charge of dogs when it was identified that he was in a fragile state - he should have been relieved of that responsibility, not necessarily as a punishment, but to prevent anything like this happening again. Too late now though.

Just awful, I dont leave my dog my car in heatwave days, even with windows open, to me it still gets too hot for my Labrador. He comes with me, even if I have to tie him ip outside shops whilst I go in. I also make sure I walk my dusty were their is a water spot so he can cool down and take his water and bowl with me. I just don't understand people, scary thing is aren't these idiots dog handlers, they certainly shouldn't be working in this field if they can't be bothered to follow the basic rules to keep them safe. Gets me so mad!

From what I can tell this guy did not deliberately leave the dogs in the car (hence why he didn't open the windows or anything else equally useless) - he completely forgot they were in the car at all.

I have. My dogs go to sleep the minute I put them in the car and I've frequently forgotton they're there. I have never left them in a hot car, but I can see how it could happen in a busy working day. It's not as though he only put them in for a trip to the park....he was working!

I fully agree that he should receive the same punishment as anyone else who causes harm to an animal, deliberate or not, but lets not forget that we are all fallible eh?

When I screw up - I usually learn from it ! Clearly this guy hasn't learned a thing!! I don't see how it can be classed as an accident? Would love someone to explain that!

Agree, Once I could maybe get but doing it twice come on the guy clearly shouldn't be a dog handler!

Look, none of us are perfect but how can you possibly say that this was an accident?? How can you forget you put the dogs in the car ?

What would you say to a client who rushed a collapsed heat stroke dog to you and said "I only left him in the car for an hour while I was in Tesco's ? Hmmm I don't think it would be 'never mind, we all make mistakes"

I have made mistakes when it's comes to my pets - like locking the cat in the cupboard all day cos shes ran in when have went to get something out or not noticing the signs of Luka's gingivitis or increasing weight gain soon as I could. Yes I have made mistakes with my pets but I have also learnt from these mistakes!

When you think about once would be awful and shocking, I would probably normally feel bad for the guy and offer him my sympathy.

However to be that bloody stupid TWICE with the same outcome I have zero sympathy for him. Yes I am sure he feels awful but not as awful as the dogs who died in that car needlessly. I hope and can only think that it is right that he loses his job as a police handler now, because he really should not work with animals if he is that careless TWICE! I don't want to hear excuses on why it happened because it is the kind of behavior which is in excusable and should lead to him losing his job! Once is bad enough twice is just pure stupidity!

I heard about this on the news this morning and I heard from a client the man tried to comit suicide afterwards. I think it's been one of those tragic accidents where the person wasn't thinking clearly.

I had a client do the same when her cat got stuck in her conservatory. she didn't realise and then instead of cooling the cat down sraight away she then brought it straight to the vets in her hot car..... not pleasent and cat died as coming through doors of surgery.

I'm thankful that my careless moments have not lead to anything, I did trap my cats tail in the door and now she hasn't got one. Oops, I've forgiven myself now but it was an accident.

I don't think we should be so hard on people especially when we're not perfect ourselves. Crulty cases for me are those of beaten, starved and neglected instead of treating illnesses.

i agree! if he has done it before why should i feel sorry for the man. we had a dog a few years ago that had managed to get himself trapped in the conservitory at a clients home and the owners were very distressed. but to purposly leave them in the car with all the windows shut is just dam right wrong. i worry abt the inlligence of the police force and this man was on tv few years ago saying that u should treat a dog as a member of the family!!! i just give up with this country at the moment. if he is allowed to carry on being a police dog handler then ill be writting to the government coz maybe once is a terrible mistake but twice just makes me angry!!

Its a different police officer but he had done the same thing a few years ago!! I'm disgusted they let him carry on being a dog handler!!!!

This is just appalling for the police force, and for the officer involved, who has since tried to commit suicide.

I feel that the police really need to reassess their dog handlers for the well being of their dogs.

I used to work for the Military at Melton Mowbray and have seen first hand how these beautiful dogs are adored by their handlers

I understand you are angry but as more information is becoming available on this story I feel that people should take a look at it - it isnt that clear cut. Lets not forget anybody can make a mistake - maybe not with such a bad outcome but nobody is perfect this has even happened to a vet

How can anyone who seals his car shut in that heat with 2 probably already panting dogs not know what was going to happen??

And yes I am angry, there is enough animal cruelty in this world without this avoidable one.

I am sure this person didnt intentionally want his dogs to boil to death in his car - I wouldnt imagine he isnt upset about what has happened -ok its a repeat accident and it shouldnt have happened lessons should have been learnt from the first time - maybe this time it will sink in? But I dont think name calling is going to help the situation.

What I am at a loss to understand is why all the car windows were shut ?? We all know not to leave dogs in cars even with the windows open so if he had to leave them in the car,(which he shouldn't have done in that heat even with them open,) WHY THE HELL DID THE F******T SHUT THEM ALL !!! Is he really that THICK !!!! This just reinforces my low opinion of the mentality/intelligence of most of the Police force.

The man in question in this news story is supposedly an experienced police dog handler and trainer. He left the dog (belgian shepherd) and puppy (GSD) whilst going to into meeting which lasted approx 1 hour. Temperature inside car reached over 40oc. Poor, poor dogs, in my opinion this man should not be allowed another police dog and certainly shouldn't be training others. Makes me mad!

There was that prof in Italy who forgot to take his daughter to nursery. She was left in the back of his car while he did a lecture and when he went back to her she'd died.

You'd think the police would have more of a clue, especially as it's happened to them before and they're the ones who get called to break into the public's cars to free hot dogs.

I'm with you on this one. I worked as a dog walker a few years ago and had a lady who insisted her dog went out at midday even in July. I used to take him to the river and let him swim for half an hour instead of running round the park. My two, who normally came with me, were left at home in the cool.

Funny you should say that - a news story was posted on another forum I frequent only the other day about a dr in Italy who did just this and the child died. There was another one last year in Cyprus - another dr would you believe?!

it makes me angry i cant believe they have done it again!! makes me sick, but then people at work think im werid coz wen im on my half day and its warm i dont take my dogs for a run up the park? or i dont take them to the beach with me all day in the heat? thing is you wouldnt leave a child in a hot car and get away with it would u!!

the one a couple of years ago (or at least the last one i remember reading about) was Notts Police - I only remember becuase we used to have dealings with them when I was at the RSPCA in the area and recognised the building on the news back then. This one is definitely new, it's all over the news on tv and internet today

Yep, not in a police van, but a private vehicle. You thought they would have learnt from before. Yet to see my first heatwave case of the year, wish it wouldn't happen...
