Hi Katie,

My previous practice told me to sign a contract forcing me to pay £6,000 back if I left within 2 years of qualifying. Needless to say, I told them where to stick it and left.

Check the VN Times and such for SVN vacancies. A lot of places will pay you to work for them, and pay for your training, and often only ask for 6 months work post qualifying. I'd be reluctant to try to pay for training off my own back if there's other ways for it to be done.

Hope this helps

You pay them £12,000 and after 2 years you are no more qualified as seen by the RCVS than my mother?

Sounds like a money making scheme to me, ive never even heard anything like it, i mean ive heard of practices doing their own in house training which is fine, but to charge for it when you dont gain anything at the end of it is mind boggling?!

I know the RCVS isnt perfect by any stretch of the imagination but they are the ones who are in charge, they set the rules and if you want to be an RVN or qualified nurse then you have to sit the RCVS exams however bad they are!!

I know how desperate you are to get in to nursing Katie but honestly i think you are wasting your money, all our trainees are paid minimum wage and their course fees are paid for by the practice, thats the way it should be in my opinion.

Re: In house nurse training £12,000, what the he'll?

Also if you train as a block release student then ideally the practice pays for your tuition, exams, etc. and also pays you for working for them. i worked as a block release student for the last 6 months of my VN training and was paid quite a competitive amount for it!

Re: In house nurse training £12,000, what the he'll?

what do they mean by qualifying as an 'animal nurse'? what exactly is that? Myself and others who have trained with RCVS accredited colleges or universitys are classed as veterinary nurses, I would be worried that although you may gain a lot of experience with them you may well not have any kind of qualification that would allow you to get a job in the veterinary world (if that is what you want!)

Go to college or university and do the veterinary nursing degree/diploma, they are at least regulated by the RCVS and UK traained VNs are quite highly sought after all over the world as well as the UK.

I wouldnt consider paying someone to allow me to work for them, it sounds like the practice are getting all the benefits and you are going to be the one loosing out!

now I am interested! if this is a more practice friendly training than the current RCVS approved mess I can see this becoming popular. This is sounding very much like the VCA/ANA to me at the moment. I do know of another practice that delivers a very good inhouse training. Not so sure about training at a cost AND working for free tho that still doesnt sound quite right unless you would be entitled to some sort of grant or bursary - but then if the course doesnt carry accreditation I cant see that would be the case

No your classed as a trainee. You become an animal nurse and then you can choose to do the rcvs diploma in vet nursing with them, it all just didn't add up really.

Re: In house nurse training £12,000, what the he'll?

it was £6,000 a year, you would work 35 hours for free
You have to pay them £6k??? Or am I reading it wrong - that's all you'd earn?????

When I started training (1991!) I got £65 p/wk - which works out around £3k p/year, but the practice did pay for the college fees (day release or block - you could choose), all our uniforms and RCVS registration.

K x
That was I pay £6000, not they pay me!
