I've only had him for a week and his first instance was only about 5 or 6 weeks ago. I've just had him in at VetsNow and they're going to unblock him but I think I have to discuss his future

Re: Urethrostomy in blocked bladder cats

we do urethrostomies on a reasonably regular basis, generally for the repeat blocked cats, yes there can be some side effects but if your cats penis is starting to necrose what have you got to lose?

If he was mine I would do it, I haven't known of many to bleed for so long post surgery, incontinence and recurrent cystitis are probably the most common complications but they are still rare

Re: Urethrostomy in blocked bladder cats

It's good to hear about so many happy endings. When I looked it up after the Vet told me, it looked like there was some bad possible side effects.

"Side effects of surgery can include bleeding for up to ten days after surgery, narrowing at the surgical site, urinary incontinence, and a greater incidence of other kinds of bladder diseases." Didn't entirely build my confidence in the procedure.

Re: Urethrostomy in blocked bladder cats

ive seen this procdure done twice and both have recovered really well and live full lives, the one recently that was done was onl young and the only problem now is his name as he is practically a girl now lol

even tho i have only seen it done twice i have heard of more cases and they have lived good lives, yes they have to look out for cysitis (can never spell that off top of my head). both of the cases i saw were reacurring blocked bladder, if it was my cat and it was offered it go for it.

Re: Urethrostomy in blocked bladder cats

Been informed by the Vet that his urethra is so scarred that she can't actually pass a catheter, he's also missing a couple mms of his urethra and the tip of his penis is turning back the way. So I only have 2 options now, urethrostomy or PTS :(

I'm taking him into work with me tomorrow to get my own Vet to check him out and discuss the options.

Re: Urethrostomy in blocked bladder cats

I've known 2 cats who have had these procedures done. The surgery was done when he was @ 6yrs old and he lived to the ripe old age of 19 with no further problems except the very occ bout of cystitis.

I did use c/d for a while afterwards after originally using a dry diet produced by upjohn (not sure if s/d was around then as it was a long time ago) and originally had him on chelix tablets (which havnt been around for quite a few years now but there are probably more up to date meds for this anyway ). He was on the c/d for about 6months if it helps.

I had been warned he may dribble urine etc but to be honest never had a problem once with this and he was urinating fine from day one post op, if I had known about the procedure after the second time he had blocked would have had it done sooner. It was the first time my vet had ever done this op which was done in the middle of the night with a book open on the end of the table so he could follow the diagrams - and I am so glad he was brave enough to try it otherwise I would have lost my cat that night.
