I have to say, the first nursing job I applied for, I just did it because I thought it would be a stop-gap and a job I could do pretty easily. I'd had a week of work experience and the job hadn't really inspired me from that.......but I found I loved it. Now 8 years of nursing later and I wouldn't want to do anything else. Well.....it has its ups and downs.....! As Sal said, give her a chance, she might surprise you! Then again, she might not, but as a good friend you just have to be there to pick up the pieces and not say I told you so.

I never knew what the job entailed before I got into it. I'd only ever owned hamsters as a child and helped out around a farm. I'd never seen any ops and didn't (and still don't) cope well with people cutting themselves. All I knew was I liked animals and wanted to work with them.

You're friend needs to find out for herself like I did. I wouldn't say anything.

Agree with that, nobody should make that decision for her, or put her off. If she is a close friend support her. I think if one of my friends said that I would really have a look at our friendship.

I don't think you should say / do anything (even if she is a close friend) She has to find out for herself.... by all means maybe try and get her some work experience beforehand to give her an idea, but other than that, just leave her to find out for herself.

There are a lot of negatives about the job but also alot of positives if it is the job for you... it DEFINATELY isn't the job for everyone, and as Sal says, there are many steps that she may well decide for herself that it isn't right for her. The practice may well suggest she comes in for some experience beforehand, especially if she hasn't seen behind the scenes at all (I know know that is what I suggest and want people to do ).

You never know, she may well love it and it will end up being the job for her..................

maybe she doesnt need putting off? maybe if she goes through application and interview procedure and gets the job she needs encouraging rather than putting off. As most of us already know this isnt the easiest of jobs to get into, and if she gets that far then that to me says she must have some determination - I wouldnt rule her out so quickly

See if you can get her in for a week of work experience? Once she sees exactly what the job entails it might put her off!

chances are you wont have to say anything - chances are this will be picked up either in the job application or if it gets that far the interview. There are so many chasing SVN places there is only a very slim chance of her getting through. There is also the chance she could surprise you and get the job and turn into a decent nurse?

How about finding her some careers info to peruse that may help her find out more about what the job entails.
