basic 2x2 wood frame with mesh attahed to it slotted into the window "frame" inside of the wiondow if need a couple of screws into the wall to hold it firm

Sounds quite good except that they are double glazed units so cannot nail them to the frames. But thats the sort of size mesh we need, hadn't thought of using that, just need a secure way of fixing it to the window.

Go to a builders or hardware shop and get some lightweight mesh nail it onto the frame and cut a small section for the window handle should be able to get it at somewhere like Jewsons or maybe B & Q the sort of stuff you see on rabbit runs. You could use chicken wire but that is harder to cut without sharp edges and with straight lines also very bendy you are better off with the square mesh shape.

i used to live in a 2nd floor flat with a kitty, which was a right pain in summer months. You can get grills that have a frame on them. We used the ones you get for car windows as we had sash windows
